Jaromír Čelakovský (born March 21, 1846 in Wroclaw , † October 16, 1914 in Prague ) was a Czech legal historian and archivist. From 1911 to 1912 he was rector of the Charles University and since 1878 he has been a member of the imperial and royal council and state parliament several times .

Life

Čelakovský was the youngest son of František Ladislav Čelakovský and his wife Antonie, née Reiss, was orphaned in 1852 after the death of his parents and grew up with his uncle Josef Frič . He attended the Old Town High School in Prague and, after graduating from high school in 1865, began studying law for four years. In 1871 he graduated as Dr. iur. Subsequently, Čelakovský initially worked at the regional civil court and in the same year received a position as adjunct at the Prague Archives as the successor to Josef Emler , who had been appointed council archivist after the death of Karel Jaromír Erben . He was able to prevail against his competitors Josef Kalousek and August Sedláček , among others . In the same year he married. During his time in the Prague Archives, Čelakovský conducted extensive legal-historical studies and worked as an editor of the national newspaper.

In 1882 he completed his habilitation on the subject of Právo odúmrtní k statkům zpupným v Čechách ( Right of Revocation of Allodial Goods in Bohemia) and in 1886 was appointed associate professor at the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Bohemia . In addition, Čelakovský continued to work at the Prague City Archives and was awarded the title of “Second City Archivist” in 1886 on the initiative of Josef Emler. From 1892 he represented the sick Emler, and after he had to give up his service in 1896 for health reasons, Čelakovský became the city archivist of Prague. His future successor, Josef Teige , was appointed as his adjunct . In 1906, after 35 years at the Prague City Archives, he retired with the honorary title of archive director. He then continued to work at Charles University. Čelakovský was initially elected dean twice and held the post of rector from 1911 to 1912.

Čelakovský was also socially and politically involved. Here he was committed to the equality of languages ​​and the use of the Czech language as an approved official language in multilingual regions. Between 1878 and 1890 he represented the rural areas of the districts of Kuttenberg and Czaslau as a member of the state parliament . From 1879 to 1881 Čelakovský was a member of the Imperial Council for the districts of Kutná Hora , Čáslav , Chotěboř and Uhlířské Janovice . In 1895 Čelakovský was again elected to the state parliament, this time as a member of the cities of Vysoké Mýto , Skuteč and Hlinsko . He held this mandate until 1912 and was a member of the state school board during this time. At the same time Čelakovský belonged from 1900 to 1902 and from 1907 to 1911 as a representative of the Young Czech Bohemian Club (towns Slaný , Rakovník , Louny, etc.) again on the Imperial Council.
