Mehmet Esat Sagay (* 1874 in Karaferye, today Veria , † May 22, 1938 in Ankara ) was a Turkish officer and politician. He was a member of the Turkish National Assembly from 1926 to 1938 and his country's minister of education from 1930 to 1932.

Life

Sagay was born in Karaferye near Thessaloniki , which at that time belonged to the Ottoman Empire , as the son of Yusuf Bey. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1894 and then served in Syria until 1898 . After returning to Istanbul , he became an instructor at the military academy. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , who later founded the Republic of Turkey, was one of his students . During the First World War he served in the Battle of Gallipoli . In 1919, Sagay was retired with the rank of Colonel .

Sagay became a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) in 1927 and was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a member of the Bursa Province . In the 6th and 7th Governments of Turkey he was Minister of Education under Ismet Inönü from September 1930.

Even though the conservative Sagay enjoyed a high reputation in the cabinet as Ataturk's former teacher, he was severely criticized several times by the MP Reşit Galip . Therefore he retired on September 19, 1932 and Galip took over the office of Minister of Education. Esat Sagay remained a member of parliament even after the parliamentary elections in 1935 and died in 1938.

In 2012 the autobiography of Sagay: Hocam - Maarif Vekili Esat Sagay'ın Hatıraları was published .
