The Escravos is a river in southern Nigeria . The Escravos is 56 kilometers long and one of several outflows from the Niger . It flows into the Gulf of Guinea in the western part of the Niger Delta .

Description and origin of name

The name comes from Portuguese and means something like " slave "; In the 18th century, the region was one of the main hubs for the slave trade between Nigeria and the USA . The river meanders west, passing through mangrove swamps. It flows into the Gulf of Guinea in the Bay of Benin and thus into the Atlantic Ocean. There are no harbors along its course, but the Escravos is linked to the cities of Forcados , Warri and Benin in a system of intertwined waterways . Since the completion of the Escravos Bar project in 1964, the Escravos has provided the only access for seagoing vessels to the ports there.

Oil and gas production

Oil company Chevron produced an average of 233,000 barrels of crude oil and 182 million cubic feet of natural gas and 5,000 barrels of liquefied gas in Nigeria in 2013 . The eligible areas are in the area of the Escravos estuary. These raw materials are shipped from Chevron Terminal on Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC). The large tankers can hold around 950,000 barrels of cargo. In addition, the tidal current can be used to generate energy at the Escravos bar .
