The Eselwerder is a small river island of the Fulda on the edge of the city center of Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony . The roofed mill bridge runs centrally over the Werder as a connection between the city center and the Tanzwerder . Opposite the Eselwerder, the Graumühle was located on the city side for centuries and continues to exist today as a run-of-river power station .
Location and description
The approximately 0.2 hectare Eselwerder is located in the floodplain where the Fulda and Werra rivers meet . Originally there was a swampy landscape there, in which raised areas such as the Doktorwerder , the Blümer Werder and the Tanzwerder have formed due to the flooding of the river .
The Eselwerder has a length of about 100 meters and a width of about 25 meters. It is not open to the public. The Werder lies in an arm of the Fulda river. The water channel towards the city center was expanded into the mill ditch of the Graumühle during the Middle Ages . The gray mill dammed the water of this side arm and thereby operated its mill wheel .
The name of the donkey is based on the fact that the donkeys from the gray mill used to be housed there. Donkeys were important helpers of the miller , with whose help he fetched grain from meal guests and brought them back flour . The mills at that time included around 8 to 12 donkeys.
In the 20th century there were plans to fill in the Mühlengraben and connect the Eselwerder to the city center. This would have made the new mill bridge built in 1979 and around 76 meters long towards Tanzwerder shorter. For hydraulic engineering reasons, this was not done.
