The Wanfrieder Schlagd is a 130 meter long street in the old town of Hann. Münden , which runs parallel to the banks of the Werra . At the same time, it is a historical Schlagd , which, like the Bremer and Kasseler Schlagd , served for centuries as a shipping pier , goods handling and trading center.

Surname

The name Schlagd comes from slagt for driving in bank piles, which were connected to each other with beams and braided fascines and thus provided the bank reinforcement. The name comes from Low German and is used in a different form, as in the more original battle , for similar bank areas throughout northern Germany. The Schlagd was named after the place Wanfried , as the Werra from Münden to this place about 70 kilometers upstream was navigable for ships at the time .

location

The Wanfrieder Schlagd begins in the west at the Schlagdspitze, which it forms with the Bremer Schlagd . This point is at the northwestern point of the old town where the right arm of the Fulda and the left arm of the Werra flow together and form the Kleine Weser between the Tanzwerder and the Doktorwerder . To the east, the Wanfrieder Schlagd runs to the Alte Werra bridge .

Münden's stacking rights, granted in 1247, helped the city of Münden, which is located on the three rivers Weser , Werra and Fulda , to prosper and prosper. The ship docks, which initially consisted of wooden fortifications, were fortified with masonry in the 1580s so that ships could dock easily and goods could be safely stored. In the 16th century, Duke Erich II granted the city the right to levy strike money, as the expansion and maintenance of the strike facilities resulted in high costs. The ship traffic between Wanfried and Münden was handled on the Wanfrieder Schlagd. The transshipment point at this point has always been necessary because of the rocky shallows of the Werrahohl in the river bed. Ships first had to be unloaded and could only pass the Werra unloaded with a shallow draft. The centuries-old obstacle to shipping, which was the basis for the stacking right, was only removed in the 1880s with the construction of a lock. The Wanfrieder Schlagd was already meaningless because shipping on the Werra came to a standstill in 1873. The rest was done by the advent of the railway, which in 1856 linked the cities of Kassel and Hanover as the Hannöversche Südbahn . In 1905 the Schlagden were given up as a ship landing stage. After that, freight traffic on the Weser ran via the Weser transshipment point built in 1906 .

today

As the intersection between the city and the rivers, the historical Schlagden in Hann. Münden is a document of trade and shipping from a monument preservation point of view. Today, the three Schlagd areas together with the two packing yards, the city wall houses, the Alte Werra bridge , the Nadelwehr and the Werdern ( Doktor- , Esels- and Tanzwerder ) form a significant and impressive urban development Ensemble. After the decline of the Schlagden as a trading center at the end of the 19th century, they were degraded to traffic areas with parking lots in the course of the 20th century. An integrated urban development concept (ISEK) from 2008, commissioned by the city, pointed to this deficiency and recommended a renovation and redesign of the Schlagden because of its tourist potential. The planning for the redesign of the Wanfrieder Schlagd with citizen participation began in 2016. Up until 2016, structural measures on the Schlagden were only carried out on the Kasseler Schlagd.
