Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox

Esmé Stewart KG (around 1579 ; † July 30, 1624 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .

Life

Stewart was a son of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox , and his wife Catherine de Balsac. Since 1583 he was the 7th seigneur d'Aubigny. In 1619 Stewart was promoted to Earl of March .

Anthony van Dyck : Sir John Stuart and his brother Bernard, the Duke's two sons, died in 1644 and 1645

In the year of his death, he succeeded his brother Ludovic , who died without legitimate descendants, as the Duke of Lennox.

Esmé Stewart was a patron and promoter of the writer Ben Jonson , who also lived in his household for a few years.

Stewart married Catherine (1592–1637), daughter of Gervais Clifton, 1st Lord Clifton, in 1609, with whom he had the following children:
