Esperantopark and Girardipark are two green spaces in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, separated from each other by only a walkway .

description

The two connected green spaces are located on a large traffic island on Friedrichstrasse and are adjacent to the Resselpark and Rosa-Mayreder-Park in the 4th district of Wieden . This entire contiguous area around Karlsplatz was part of the glacis surrounding the Vienna city wall from the 16th century and was traversed by the Vienna River. In 1817 the river was regulated, which was spanned by the Kärntnertorbrücke as an extension of the Kärntner Straße, which was replaced by the Elisabethbrücke in 1854 . In 1895–1902 the Wien River was finally vaulted, the Elisabeth Bridge demolished and the underground route of the light rail laid next to the river. With the construction of the underground in 1969, the whole area was redesigned by the Swedish architect Sven-Ingvar Andersson and the street layout of Friedrichstrasse was changed, so that the situation that still exists today was created. The Esperanto and Girardipark were created in the course of the planting of all green areas on Karlsplatz, which was redesigned by Jakob Fina in 2006.

The area of the two parks is located in the middle of busy streets and is therefore not suitable for lingering. As a result, the usual seating in parks was dispensed with and instead an eye-catcher was created in Esperanto Park with ornamental raised flowerbeds.

The monument to the inventor of the Esperanto planned language , Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, is located in "Esperantopark" . It was donated by the Esperanto Museum and created in 1958 by Josef Müller-Weidler . Zamenhof's bronze bust is on a high pedestal. The monument used to stand on Börseplatz . The establishment of the monument and the naming of the park honored the Esperantist movement in Vienna, which held a congress in this city as early as 1910 and world congresses in 1970 and 1992.

In Esperantopark there is also the descent into the Viennese sewer system , which can be visited as part of so-called third man tours . Reference is made to the famous film The Third Man with Orson Welles , which is famous not least for the scenes in the Vienna sewer system.

The neighboring "Girardipark" is dominated by the monument to the actor Alexander Girardi , which was created in 1929 by Otto Hofner . It is a stone monument that shows Girardi in full figure on a very low plinth. As Valentin, (with a plane under his arm), from the play Der Verschwender by Ferdinand Raimund .
