Estêvão Roberto da Silva (born December 26, 1845 in Niterói , RJ, Brazil; † November 9, 1891 ibid) was a Brazilian painter and art teacher in the second half of the 19th century. The first important Afro-Brazilian to be trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (AIBA) was distinguished by his still lifes and is still considered to be one of the most important representatives of this art direction.

Life

Estêvão Silva was a contemporary of the painters Almeida Júnior , Rodolfo Amoedo , Belmiro de Almeida , Antônio Firmino Monteiro and the sculptor Henrique Bernardelli . He enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro in 1864 and studied with Victor Meirelles , Jules Le Chevrel and Agostinho da Mota , with whom he developed a passion for painting still lifes.

In the 1880s he turned to the German landscape painter Johann Georg Grimm and his group of artists, Grimm , and identified himself with the then innovative approach of their members: nature studies through direct observation and painting outdoors. It was about breaking with the aesthetic norms of the academy. His commonality with the group, in particular with Antônio Parreiras (1860-1937) and Giovanni Battista Castagneto (1851-1900), of whom he painted a portrait in 1880, did not go so far that he had a relationship with the AIBA Academy broke off.

One episode of his life is particularly well known: At a meeting of the Aiba in 1880, Silva protested in the presence of the Emperor Dom Pedro II against the award given to him at the 25th General Exhibition of Fine Arts. A committee judged this to be disobedience and banned him from studying at AIBA for a year.

In the 1880s, Estêvão Silva taught at the School of Arts and Crafts of Rio de Janeiro.

Meaning and work

The artist is considered one of the best still life painters of the nineteenth century. In addition to his still lifes, he made several portraits and, among other things, pictures of historical ( A Lei de 28 de setembro ), religious ( São Pedro ) and allegorical subjects ( A Caridade ).
