Josef Pechtl (born October 30, 1949 in Lermoos ) is a former Austrian ski racer who specialized in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . He was one of the top three in the World Cup and won five European Cup races . In 1975 he became Austrian national champion in slalom.

biography

After success in the junior area, Pechtl started in the World Cup for the first time in the 1968 season and reached sixth place in the giant slalom in Méribel . In the following years he could not repeat this result due to several injuries and from then on he was used in FIS races . After winning the giant slalom in Krimml in 1971 and further good placements, he was also able to start again in the World Cup, but remained there for the time being without any notable successes. In the newly created European Cup he won the giant slalom in Les Menuires in 1972 , but in the World Cup he remained beyond the top 20. With two European Cup victories in the giant slaloms in Innsbruck and Zwiesel at the beginning of the 1972/73 season, he finally made the leap back into the World Cup team.

On December 19, 1972, Pechtl took seventh place in the giant slalom in Madonna di Campiglio, his first World Cup points in almost five years. He achieved the best result in a World Cup race on March 8, 1973. Behind compatriot Hans Hinterseer and the Swiss Adolf Rösti , he finished third in the giant slalom at Anchorage in Alaska . Another time he came in the giant slalom of Heavenly Valley in the points and he finished twelfth in the 1972/73 season in the discipline World Cup.

In the winter of 1973/74 Pechtl achieved further good results. In January he was among the top ten in three giant slalom and one slalom, which meant that he qualified for the 1974 World Cup in St. Moritz in the giant slalom . There he took seventh place. In the last slalom of the season in Vysoké Tatry , he was also seventh and thus achieved his best result of the season in the World Cup. In the winter of 1974/75 Pechtl remained without World Cup points and he was again increasingly used in the European Cup, where he won two victories in the slalom of Villars-sur-Ollon and the giant slalom of Enneberg . At the Austrian Championships in Zell am See , he was national champion in slalom. In the World Cup he did not get any notable results at the beginning of next winter and so he ended his career during the 1975/76 season.

Pechtl remained connected to skiing. From 1979 he worked regularly as a ski instructor and in 1987 he took over the ski school in his home town of Lermoos, where he also owns a hotel. His son Arno, born in 1981, was also a ski racer. He won five FIS races and finished second in the downhill at the 2005 Universiade .
