The Estadio Neza 86 is a football stadium in Nezahualcóyotl , a satellite town in the state of Mexico east of Mexico City , which many Mexicans simply call Neza . It is located on the site of the main campus of the Universidad Tecnológica de Nezahualcóyotl and is officially called Estadio Universidad Tecnológica de Nezahualcóyotl .

History of the stadium and its users

One of the widespread misinformation about this stadium is that its construction was primarily intended to serve as a venue for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . However, this claim is easily refutable by the obvious facts: the stadium opened in 1981, while Mexico was only awarded the World Cup in 1983.

CD Coyotes de Neza

Rather, a suitable stadium was needed to provide the Club Deportivo Neza with a suitable home ground; because since the rise in 1978 in the Mexican Primera División , the Coyotes had to play their first division home games under rather provisional conditions. Deportivo Neza used the stadium, which initially bore the name José López Portillo and was given its current name at the 1986 World Cup, from the time it opened in 1981 until the club withdrew from the Primera División at the end of the 1987/88 season for financial reasons.

CF Potros Neza

The withdrawal of the Coyotes de Neza from professional football left a void in which the newly formed Club de Fútbol Potros Neza came across. In order for this club to be able to start in the Segunda Division, which was still second-rate at the time, eligibility to play in this league was acquired by purchasing the license of the Correcaminos de la UAT team, which had just been relegated from the Primera División and which in turn secured the first division eligibility for Deportivo Neza . The Potros had very good starting conditions, as they made it straight to the top in their first season in 1988/89. But this hopeful team disintegrated after the right to play in the first division had been sold to CD Veracruz before the start of the 1989/90 season .

Toros Neza

The next hopefuls of the sister city, which is overgrown with the Mexican capital, were the Toros Neza , who were promoted to the Primera División in 1993. But they were confronted with a previously unknown problem in Mexican football in their first season. The Mexican Football Association questioned the first division suitability of the Estadio de Neza (although it was only 12 years old and 7 years earlier served as a World Cup arena!) And soon closed it for first division games, so that the Toros were forced to play 14 home games of the 1993/94 season in Pachuca . After some modernization measures, the first division football came back to the Estadio Neza 86 in 1994/95 and remained there until the Toros were relegated in 2000. In the two following years (2000/01 and 2001/02), second division games were held here as the Toros played in Primera División 'A' . But after the license was sold to a team called Gavilanes , the stadium was threatened with vacancy.

CF Atlante

When looking for a new user, they found CF Atlante , based in neighboring Mexico City , who did not have its own stadium and only enjoyed hospitality in the far too large Aztec stadium . Because Atlante played most of its home games in the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons at the Estadio Neza 86, the top division football came back to Nezahualcóyotl in this way. But due to tensions between the city council of Nezahualcóyotl and the management of Club Atlante, the club withdrew from the stadium during the Clausura 2004 and played its home games again in the Aztec stadium.

Soccer World Cup 1986

At the 1986 soccer World Cup in Mexico, the Estadio Neza 86 served as a venue for three group E group matches, in which Germany was also represented. However, the German national football team played all group games in the Estadio La Corregidora in Querétaro , so that only the group games without German participation were played here: Scotland - Denmark (0: 1) on June 4th, Denmark - Uruguay (6: 1) on June 8th. June and Scotland - Uruguay (0-0) on June 13th.

Today's use of the stadium

Atlante's move would have meant that the stadium would have been vacant again. In order to avoid this, a second division license was acquired for the starving CF Potros Neza for the 2004/05 season, which was sold to Tampico-Madero FC after just one year . Since then, the city has not been represented in the top three leagues of Mexican club football. That is why they had meanwhile passed over to leaving the Estadio Neza 86 to the local football teams of the Águilas Blancas and Burros Blancos on certain occasions . Since the introduction of the new second football league called Liga de Ascenso in the 2009/10 season , the city was initially with Potros Neza and has been back in professional football with Toros Neza since 2011/12 .
