from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ethem Sarısülük (born July 11, 1986 in Beylice , Sungurlu district , Çorum , † June 14, 2013 in Ankara ) was a Turkish protester who was shot by police during the 2013 protests in Turkey . He gained international fame through his death during the protests.

In Kızılay Square , memorial candles form his name on the spot where Ethem Sarısülük was killed.

Life

Ethem Sarısülük was born in 1986 in the village of Beylice near Sungurlu ; a city in the province of Çorum . His father was Muzaffer Sarısülük, a literature teacher, and his mother was Sayfı Sarısülük. Ethem was the second oldest of five siblings. He had three brothers and a sister. The oldest was the sister. The family was of the Alevi faith. The parents had married young when the father was still studying. After finishing his studies the father got a job as a teacher in Siverek. When he was about to be transferred to Kayseri, he resigned. The family returned to Çorum. There the father fell ill, left the family and lived as a hermit in the area. An uncle brought the family to Ankara. She lived there in a gecekondu . The mother earned a living as a cleaning lady, but the family lived in poor conditions. Ethem attended Kınık Elementary School. After secondary school, he started the Abidinpaşa Endüstri Meslek Lisesi vocational school . There he had difficulty adjusting and left school. Then Ethem tried Tuzluçayır High School. But there was no money for the school books and he also left this school after two years. Ethem did his military service in Şemdinli and worked as an unskilled worker for a pizza baker, in construction, as a load carrier (hamal) or in transport. He learned to weld, worked as a piecework worker and stayed in Hakkari for a while. The younger brother described Ethem as angry and interested in politics. He couldn't stand wrong. According to his brother, Sarısülük was a regular reader of the Alınteri newspaper . This newspaper comes from the environment of the illegal TİKB. The TİKB itself, however, announced that Sarısülük, as part of the TİKB's “Workers Defense Committee”, took part in the action to “punish” the “bloodthirsty” person responsible for a fatal accident at OSTİM. According to Alınteri , the victim's arms and legs were broken.

The Turkish press also showed pictures of Sarısülük participating in violent protests in Ankara two weeks before his death and in May 2013. Furthermore pictures of Sarısülüks u. a. shown at memorial services for İbrahim Kaypakkaya or Mahir Çayan .

Protests in Turkey

On May 28, 2013, a wave of protests began in Istanbul against a planned construction project on the site of Gezi Park . After the conflict escalated as a result of a violent police operation on May 31, 2013, demonstrators in several major Turkish cities opposed the authoritarian policies of the Islamic conservative ruling party Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP).

Besides Istanbul , Ankara in particular became the scene of ongoing protests and violent clashes with the police, particularly in Kızılay Square , Kuğulu Park and the Dikmen district. In Ankara, the protests were among the most brutally suppressed by the police.

Circumstances of death

Ethem Sarısülük was shot in the head by a riot police during the Gezi Park protests in Ankara's Güvenpark on June 1 and died from his wounds on June 14. Previously, Sarısülük and the group of demonstrators had thrown stones at the police, according to reports. Sarısülük, masked with a red cloth, was also seen collecting stones. The demonstrators attacked the police and placed them in great distress as the local conditions made it difficult to back off. The policeman in question broke away from the group and moved towards the demonstrators, kicking another demonstrator. He drew his gun and pointed it up. Sarısülük threw a stone at the policeman the moment he shot. In the first two shots the barrel was pointed in the air, but very unstable. On the third shot, the gun barrel was horizontal for a moment with the arm raised. On the day of the crime, a video showing the scene of Sarısülük's shooting was spread on social media in Turkey. The video stops whenever the police officer acts relevant to the course of events.

The autopsy of the body took place on June 15, 2013 in the forensic medicine department in Ankara. A forensic scientist also attended the autopsy at the family's request. The family's lawyer, Kazım Bayraktar, told reporters that a bullet was removed from Sarısülük's head and noted that the removal of the projectile was recorded by a prosecutor who also attended the autopsy. The investigations were not yet completed at this point in time and the autopsy report was still confidential.

A memorial service in Ankara as the beginning of the last escort of Ethem Sarısülük on June 16, 2013 was disrupted by massive police operations, so that it could not take place as planned. The Batıkent funeral procession was not allowed to enter Kızılay Square, so the body was taken to a cemevi .

On June 23, 2013 new video images of the street fighting scenes from Ankara by Anadolu Ajansi were published. The pictures show how protesters, armed with shields, force police officers to retreat by throwing stones. The scene in which a police officer fires three shots in the air and a demonstrator falls to the ground with the third shot is also shown from a different angle than in the video known up to that point. The publication of images from a police camera followed on June 26, 2013.

There are different statements about the date of Ethem Sarısülük's death. According to the treating Numune Hospital in Ankara, the final death occurred on June 14 at 3:15 p.m. Other media had reported the death 11 days earlier.

On June 16, Sarısülük's body arrived in his home village. Several thousand people gave him the last escort. He was buried there that evening.

Investigations against the suspected police officer

The Sarısülük family's lawyer, Kazim Bayraktar, told the media that evidence had been obtained at the crime scene and that the course of events had been discussed with witnesses. He looked at the footage from the surveillance camera, which was congruent with the video published on the day of the incident. The police officer acted in the presence of his superior. Police forces would be given firearms and ammunition with a registration that is always recorded when a firearm or ammunition is used during an operation. This means that a shooter can always be identified within the police. The police headquarters in Ankara had not given the name of the policeman who shot Ethem Sarısülük in the head in Ankara on June 1st to the public prosecutor, even though the public prosecutor in charge of the investigation had already given the police authorities the week of June 3rd . submitted an official request for identification of the police officer concerned by June 9th. The family lawyer then accused the police of "covering up and aiding and abetting" a crime for refusing to use the policeman's name, and feared that the cover-up could help repetition of such incidents. The police authorities also failed to comply with an official request from the public prosecutor's office for a detailed expert report and inspection of the video recordings. It is also alleged that the empty cartridge case for the shot at Sarısülük has not yet been found.

On June 18, details from the investigation ordered by the public prosecutor's office, taking into account the testimony of witnesses and the evaluation of the surveillance camera recordings, became known. Accordingly, Ethem Sarısülük did not hit a ricochet, but a targeted shot in the head. After analyzing the images, the police officer fired from a distance of 4.8 meters. According to the preliminary autopsy report, a 9 mm projectile penetrated the skull and brain.

On June 24, 23 days after the shooting of Ethem Sarısülük, the responsible public prosecutor applied for the judge of the peace to issue a pre-trial detention order. On the same day, the police officer suspected of manslaughter (Art. 81 tStGB), whose name had now become known, was brought before the investigating judge and placed under judicial control (Art. 109 Para. 1, 3 lit. a, b tStPO). The policeman was banned from leaving the country and had to report to the station on a weekly basis. The judge ruled that, according to the state of the investigation, the police officer fired in self-defense (meşru savunma) and should therefore be released. He testified that the demonstrators attacked him, kicked him and stole his helmet and baton. He then shot in the air in self-defense and for fear of lynching .

The policeman also said that a stone hit his wrist while shooting and that it changed the direction of the barrel of his weapon and aimed it at the victim's head. However, he acted out of self-protection and did not shoot targeted. The judge responsible defended his decision to release the accused as a decision of conscience. The family's appeal against the judge's decision was dismissed. The policeman who was transferred to Urfa had to answer for killing as a result of negligent violation of the self-defense limits before the 6th Large Criminal Chamber in Ankara. He took part in the negotiations disguised in a wig and sunglasses. During a negotiation, he was connected via video conference. He was sentenced to seven years, eight months and ten days in prison. A lawyer for the co-plaintiffs announced a revision before the Yargıtay .

Aftermath

Alınteri published a book on Sarısülük. It is called Halkın yoldaşı Ethem Sarısülük (roughly: "Ethem Sarısülük, Comrade of the People"). In it Tahsin Yılmaz, according to his own account, collected statements from family members, colleagues, comrades, friends, lawyers, witnesses to his death and people who fought with him on the barricades.

On July 9th, Mustafa Sarısülük and his wife announced on Twitter that the police had raided the homes of Ethem Sarısülük's family members and left a threatening letter threatening arrest for “talking too much”.

The death of Ethem Sarısülük was sung early on as a poem set to music. Alpay sang in the song Ethem'in Sessiz Çığlığı to the poem Vasiyet by Hüseyin Fehmi İnci and to the music by Alper Kömürcü: "Well, well, I was defeated, you beat me, but I won, you lost" .

The death of Ethem Sarısülük was put by the Union of Revolutionary Communists of Turkey (TİKB) on June 12, 2013 in the context of a self-sacrificing struggle between the proletariat and neoliberalism : “Comrade Ethem was on the front line of the position after position fought for days Fight against the presumption and terror of the fascist state, which is nourished by the neo-liberal capitalist policy of exploitation and looting. […] The working class has lost a brave son who devoted everything he owned to his class, including his life. "

Forum participants of Çaldıran Park in Ankara demanded that Çaldıran Park be renamed “Ethem Sarısülük Park”. According to a statement by the mayor of Çankaya municipality in Ankara on July 2, the municipality meeting in Çankaya decided to name four new parks in the district after the names of the protesters Ethem Sarısülük, Mehmet Ayvalıtaş and Abdullah Cömert and police officer Mustafa Sarı. The official renaming of Çaldıran Park in Ankara-Çankaya (Kolej) as Ethem-Sarısülük-Park was thereupon on July 6th by the municipality of Yenimahalle at the request of the population from Ankara-Batıkent with and with the permission of Ethem Sarısülük's relatives from Ankara-Batıkent solemnly completed and the park signage implemented accordingly by municipal employees. After the park opened on July 7th with the participation of the Deputy Mayor of Yenimahalle, the Batıkent Dayanışma Platformu (Batıkent Solidarity Platform ) and the Ethem Sarısülüks family, which was attended by thousands of people, a memorial event organized by the Batıkent Solidarity Platform took place in Vedat-Dalokay- Park in Ankara-Batıkent, where artists such as Tolga Sağ , Fevzi Kurtuluş Gülseren Kılıç , the music ensembles Grup Günyüzü and Grup Yeniden as well as Hasan Tatar performed.
