Etroplus is a genus of cichlids . The two species of the genus occur in coastal fresh waters and in brackish water in southern India ( Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu and the south of Andhra Pradesh ) and on Sri Lanka and, besides Pseudetroplus, are the only cichlids on the Indian subcontinent . The generic name comes from the Greek ("eton" = belly, "hoplon" = weapon) and refers to the strong spines of the anal fin.

features

Etroplus species are 11.5 to 40 cm long. Their body is oval to egg-shaped or disc-shaped and strongly flattened on the sides. The unpaired fins (dorsal and anal fin) are rounded. They are open brooders who lay their spawn on stones, leaves, or wood, rarely in caves, and form a parent family . Etroplus species feed on zooplankton, fish larvae and algae.

Morphologically , the two Etroplus species differ from the Indian cichlid ( Pseudetroplus maculatus ), which was also included in the Etroplus genus until mid-2014 . a. through 12 to 13 ( vs. 11) thoracic ribs and 28 to 29 vertebrae (vs. 26-27). In addition, the anterior half of the middle suture between the lower pharyngealia in Etroplus is smooth (vs. sawed), the first six pterygiophores of the anal fin lie in front of the first two (vs. three) hemispheres , supraoccipitals and exoccipitals (bones at the base of the skull) do not form any Outgrowth that overlaps the foramen magnum (large occipital hole) (vs. outgrowth overlaps the foramen magnum halfway) and single-pointed and spade-shaped anterior jaw teeth (vs. three-pointed and pointed).

External system

Etroplus is a very original genus of cichlids and, together with Pseudetroplus and the Malagasy genus Paretroplus, forms the subfamily Etroplinae , which is at the base of the cichlid tree.
