Eugène Forcade (* 1820 in Marseille , † November 7, 1869 in Billancourt ) was a French publicist and writer .

Life

Eugène Forcade attended the Lycée Thiers in his hometown and in 1837, at the age of only 17, took over the then leading Marseilles newspaper Le Sémaphore , which he edited until 1840, while at the same time he was employed in a local bank and thereby acquired significant knowledge of financial matters. At Guizot's instigation, he turned to Paris in 1840 and began publishing there in 1843. He emerged with articles of economic content, first in the Revue Indépendante , then in the Revue des Deux Mondes , for which he wrote the political review until 1868. But he also dealt with other subjects, such as Les essayistes anglaises , Les romanciers anglais , Études historiques sur l'Angleterre , Portraits politiques anglais , Histoire de la révolution de Février 1848 , Histoire de causes de la guerre d'Orient (1854) and others In these works Forcade showed a great talent for the subject of essays. He was interested in the theater and married the actress Camille d'Harville, who appeared in tabloids.

In addition to his work for the Revue Indépendante and Revue des Deux Mondes , Forcade edited the Revue nouvelle , which he founded in 1845, but which ended in 1847. In 1850 he became editor-in-chief of the Patrie for a time ; In 1851 he published the liberal Messager de l'Assemblée , who vigorously opposed the policies of Louis Napoleon and was suppressed after his coup on December 2, 1851. The way Forcade predicted the coup in this newspaper earned him a three-month jail sentence. In 1854 he took over the editing of the Semaine financière , where he discussed banking issues very skillfully until the beginning of 1868. His main work, however, was the political review of the Revue des Deux Mondes . Brilliantly written and full of witty remarks, this review was an important voice advocating freedom, especially in the first years of the Second Empire . The magazine received a warning following one of his 1861 articles.

In 1868 Forcade fell into mental illness and was taken to a psychiatric clinic in Trouville, which he left in 1869 as recovered. He then took up residence in Billancourt near Paris and died on November 7, 1869 at the age of 49. The Semaine financière was auctioned and brought in 80,000 francs for the heirs.
