Eugene Felix

Eugen Felix (born April 27, 1836 or 1837 in Proßnitz ( Moravia ) as Veith Ehrenstamm ; † August 21, 1906 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter . His name was Veith Ehrenstamm after his grandfather, the factory owner, who died in Proßnitz in 1827 .

Life

Eugen Felix was a pupil of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller around 1852 and of Carl Rahl before 1859 . Around 1859 he received further artistic training in Léon Cogniet's studio in Paris . In 1865 Felix returned to Vienna after making a long trip through Europe. From 1866 he regularly took part in art exhibitions there. He later became a member of the Vienna Artists' Cooperative , of which he finally became president in 1891. From around 1868 he was also the librarian of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, from 1875/1876 and 1886 from 1890 he was also its director.

At first he directed his main attention to church painting and genre painting . Works from this period were, for example, The First Friend in the Belvedere in Vienna , The painter's studio , The little well- wishers , The Falconer (The Falconer). Later he turned to mythological painting ( The Bacchantes ) and the portrait, which he, supported by a pleasing coloring and an elegant design, cultivated with particular luck among the aristocracy and the high financial world.
