Eugen Gmeiner

Eugen Friedrich Gmeiner (born August 26, 1927 in Bucharest , † May 17, 1977 in Halifax ) was an Austrian - Canadian organist .

Life

Eugen Gmeiner studied organ playing with Karl Josef Walter at the Vienna Music Academy until 1949 . He then worked as an organist at the Reformed City Church in Vienna until 1956 . During this time he often gave organ concerts on the radio. Gmeiner then emigrated to Canada, where he worked as musical director at the Baptist Church in Wolfville and taught organ playing at Acadia University from 1956 to 1977 . From 1957 he was a university organist.

Gmeiner had been a Canadian citizen since 1962 and was the first Canadian to win the National Organ Competition in Fort Wayne , USA. In 1967 he graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in music . Extensive concert tours have taken him through Canada, the USA and Europe. Eugen Gmeiner was considered an outstanding Bach interpreter and recorded several of Bach's organ works on record.
