Eugen Hordliczka (* 1857 in Galicia ; † June 22, 1912 in Vienna ) was an Austrian general staff officer.

Life

Hordliczka studied engineering at the German National Polytechnic Institute of the Kingdom of Bohemia . In 1877 he became active in what was then Corps Constantia Prague. When Constantia gave up the corporation principle in 1882 and became a fraternity , he did not join the fraternity. The old gentlemen's association of the Corps Frankonia Prague later awarded him the ribbon when a reconstitution of the active corps was to be prepared.

After graduating, Hordliczka went to the Joint Army as an officer . On 7 December 1903 he became a colonel in the general staff corps and the head of the Registry Bureau appointed the General Staff. He was in charge of the Habsburg monarchy's counter-espionage at the time . Under Hordliczka the organizational structure was supported more strongly; above all, kuk customer service points were increasingly used in many cities. In the period before the First World War, a strong activity of agents developed across Europe between the individual countries that were in different military alliances. The secret service of Nicholas II (Russia) spied not only in the Balkans , but also in the areas of the multi-ethnic state Austria-Hungary . On the other hand, the Austrian state had to build up its own efficient network of agents that uncovered these activities and also acted in neighboring Russian Poland . During this time Colonel Alfred Redl was Hordliczka's deputy. In 1912 he was exposed as a traitor and a Russian double spy. It was one of the biggest scandals in the Imperial Austrian military shortly before the First World War. The espionage activities of the vain and skillful Colonel Redl remained hidden from Hordliczka during his tenure. It was only under his successor, Colonel August Urbański von Ostrymiecz , that Redl was exposed as a spy and forced to commit suicide.

Promoted to kuk major general on May 3, 1910, Hordliczka was in command of the 97th Infantry Brigade in Vienna. He died after a brief illness at the age of 55. His grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery has been preserved.
