Eugene Osswald

Eugen Osswald (born January 22, 1879 in Stuttgart , † February 17, 1960 in Munich ) was a German animal painter and illustrator.

Life and works

Eugen Osswald came from a family of builders; he had four siblings. His professional goal was initially stone sculptor . At the age of 18 he began training as a draftsman in the Heinrich Deichsel architectural office in Stuttgart. However, after completing his military service in the Kaiser Friedrich No. 125 Infantry Regiment, he moved to the Munich Art Academy. He began his studies either in 1900 or after a period in Bern and Basel , after illustrating children's books and portraying horses there, in 1903.

Heinrich von Zügel , who, as a member of the examination board, had to assess his application portfolio, procured him a scholarship; his teachers became Angelo Jank and Reins. In the summer months, Osswald and Zügel painted in front of nature in Wörth am Rhein . After completing his studies, around 1905/07, he moved to Paris for a year . In 1910 he traveled to the Middle East. Many of his animal studies were made while traveling with large circus companies. In addition to his paintings, Osswald also created illustrations for children's books, most of which were published by Scholz in Mainz , and animal quartets.

He was in the tradition of impressionism ; Typical for his pictures is a broad application of paint and light coloring. Osswald often exhibited in the Munich Glass Palace . The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen owns a painting entitled Budgie and Canary by Osswald from 1920.
