EuroMayDay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2001, a network of Italian, French and Catalan activists called for a EuroMayDay parade on May 1st , which took place in Milan for the first time. The central concern was and is to give expression to the most diverse forms of precarization in work and life. It is not about representation and / or uniformity, but about making the multitude of desires, forms of life and struggle visible. The focus is on self-organization and networking . The organization of MayDay on or around May 1st is intended to symbolically demonstrate this tension. The EuroMayDay takes place annually in different cities in Europe.

history

Participation in MayDay has grown steadily. From 5,000 people in 2001 to 50,000 in 2003. In 2004 there were already 100,000 demonstrators who demonstrated with their parade against the precarization of work and life - with a variety of actions that go far beyond the format of the classic demonstration. In 2004, MayDay took place in other European cities for the first time. In addition to Milan, Barcelona in particular was the site of extensive re-appropriation of the inner city. The European Social Forum in London ultimately served to extend the EuroMayDay movement and process to many other cities (mainly in Western Europe). MayDayParades took place in Amsterdam , Barcelona , Berlin , Bochum , Dortmund , Geneva , Hamburg , Hanau , Helsinki , Jyväskylä , Copenhagen , L'Aquila , León , London , Liège , Milan , Maribor , Marseille , Naples , Palermo , Paris , Seville , Sofia , Stockholm , Tübingen , Vienna , but also in Tokyo with many thousands of participants. In 2007 EuroMayDay was supposed to officially leave Western Europe for the first time and, as MondoMayDay, contribute to the organization of the precarious worldwide.

San Precario, Santa Precaria

San Precario is a figure who was invented by Italian activists for the EuroMayDay, but has meanwhile also gained fame beyond that. He should act as the patron saint of all those affected by precarization . San Precario figurines are now used in social protests all over Europe. In Vienna, Santa Precaria has been a female counterpart since 2012, as in Austria women in particular are affected by precarious working conditions.
