Europride
Europride is a pan-European pride event that has been taking place since 1992 and takes place every year between June and August in a major European city.
For a few weeks, artistic, human rights and sporting events take place in the respective city, ending on the last weekend with a large parade demonstration (à la Christopher Street Day ), live music, a human rights conference , music festivals and club events, as well as memorial events for AIDS victims.
Background and organization
In 1991 the European Pride Organizers Association (EPOA), now registered in Belgium, was founded in London on the initiative of the Pride organizers from London, Berlin and Amsterdam. The current President of the EPOA is the Latvian human rights activist Kristine Garina . The organization, which now has around 90 member organizations in 32 European countries (eleven of them in Germany and two each in Austria and Switzerland), has been awarding the title “EuroPride” to one of its candidate member organizations since 1992 (with the exception of 1995 and 1999) . This then offers a larger supporting program than a "normal" Pride and is geared towards European participation. The EPOA is a member of InterPride and in turn supports national networks such as the CSD Germany or the UK Pride Organizers Network.
In 2019 EuroPride took place in Vienna ( Austria ). For the first time in the history of the event, an incumbent head of state of a country appeared. The Austrian Federal President , Alexander Van der Bellen , emphasized that " LGBTIQ rights are human rights ".
