Euromillions

Countries participating in Euromillions:
  • Founding countries (February 2004)
  • Acceding Countries (October 2004)
  • Euromillions (in Austria, own spelling EuroMillions ) or Euromillions (in Switzerland, own spelling EuroMillions ) is a multi-state lottery in the totalizator process that has been played in some European countries since February 13, 2004. Countries that have taken part in the European lottery so far are Spain , France , United Kingdom , Austria , Belgium , Ireland , Luxembourg , Portugal , Switzerland andLiechtenstein , which, unlike the other countries, has a purely passive role without any organizational influence.

This is a European cooperation between the various national lotteries that jointly operate Euromillions. This means that a larger number of people can be reached and it is possible to offer higher jackpots. The population of all participating countries is around 218 million.

In the Euromillionen lottery five are chosen from the numbers 1 to 50 and two from 12 star numbers. The game formula is accordingly 5 out of 50 plus 2 of 12 . The hit probability of tips depends on this game formula, not on the number of players. A multi-state lottery jackpot is usually higher than one of the state lotteries such as 6 out of 49. As of February 17, 2012, winning caps have been fixed. The upper limit is now 190 million euros. The limitation works in such a way that in the first rounds in which the upper profit limit is reached, any amount that exceeds this is transferred to the next lower profit rank. If the amount in the first rank is not won, this amount remains for the next four drawings. If in the following fifth round, in which the winnings are again the same as in the previous drawing, no winner is determined in the first rank, then a so-called "rolldown" takes place. This means that the profit of the first rank is distributed to the next rank. The principle of the "rolldown" has been in use since February 21, 2012. After a rolldown, the subsequent profit of the first rank starts again with 17 million euros.

The drawing of the Euromillions lottery numbers is the same for all participating countries and takes place every Tuesday and Friday between 8.45pm and 9.30pm in Paris. A completed tip field, i.e. five numbers and two star numbers, has cost 2.50 euros since July 13, 2018, compared to 2.20 euros previously, which in Austria was made up of a portion for the newly introduced “Austria Bonus” of 0.30 euros and the pure game price of 2.20 euros, which in turn can be divided into the actual stake of 1.639 euros and the administrative fee of 0.561 euros. Half of the game price, i.e. 1.10 euros, will be distributed to the winners in the various prize categories.

Euromillions cannot be played in the state lotteries in Germany because the German state lotteries have not joined the Euromillions network. Online gaming offers are only organized in Germany by private companies that have covered the risk of paying out huge profits either through insurance or business assets.

    Prize tiers

In the Euromillionen lottery there are thirteen different prize categories to which the prize money is distributed. 50 percent of the stake is paid out as a winnings. Two correct numbers are required to win in the lowest prize category. Five correct and two correct star numbers are required for the main prize.

    Odds of winning

The chances of winning with Euromillions are often lower than with national lotteries such as the Austrian Lottery 6 out of 45 or the British National Lottery , but the European lottery offers significantly higher profits. An exception is the German lottery 6 out of 49 , whose probability of winning the jackpot is exactly 1 in 139,838,160 or 0.00000072 percent identical to the Euromillions .

The table below shows the chances of winning Euromillions depending on their rank.

The first record of 115.4 million euros was won by Dolores McNamara from Ireland on July 29, 2005. On February 3, 2006, three winners shared the record jackpot of 183 million euros after the first place had not been taken for eleven draws. Two French and one Portuguese received 61,191,026 euros each. In order not to let the jackpot rise any further, the rules of the game in the period from 2006 to 2009 provided that the jackpot would be divided between the next occupied rank after the twelfth drawing. This happened for the first time on November 17, 2006, after around 183 million euros had accumulated in the jackpot. The sum was distributed among the winners of the second tier, so there were 20 winners of 9.6 million euros each. The Bayford couple from England cracked the highest jackpot to date with 190 million euros on August 10, 2012, but because of the strength of the pound at the time, “only” 148.6 million pounds were paid out. A jackpot, which was also filled with 190 million euros, was cracked by a Portuguese on October 24, 2014, but only 152 million euros were paid out because of the gambling tax in Portugal of 20 percent. The next jackpot filled with 190 million euros went to a Spaniard on October 6, 2017, who had handed in his ticket in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria ; He, too, was paid just 152 million euros because of the 20 percent gambling tax in Spain. The fourth highest jackpot with 185 million euros, the equivalent of 161.6 million pounds, was cracked on July 12, 2011 by the Weir couple from Scotland, who are still considered the highest jackpot in Great Britain. On February 19, 2019, an Irish family from Naul in County Dublin managed to hit the jackpot with 175.4 million euros. The French cracked the jackpot on November 13, 2012 with 169.8 million euros, on September 13, 2011 with around 162.3 million euros and on March 29, 2013 with around 132.5 million euros. A British player who remained anonymous was able to win the jackpot of around 129.8 million euros, 113 million pounds, on October 8, 2010. The Englishman Trotter succeeded in this on March 14, 2014 with a jackpot of almost 129.4 million euros, 108 million pounds. A Spanish player who remained anonymous cracked the jackpot of around 137.3 million euros on June 13, 2014. Previously, on May 8, 2009, a Spanish woman won a single win of 126.2 million euros. Further individual prizes were distributed on May 13, 2011 in the amount of 121 million euros to the Spaniard Delgado Rodríguez and on October 7, 2011 in the amount of 117.7 million euros, 101.2 million pounds, to the Englishman Dawes.

The biggest peak wins in German-speaking countries to date have been:

    • 162,403,002 euros on October 2, 2018 in north-western Switzerland consisting of the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Land, Aargau and Solothurn, but less effective tax of at least 25 percent;
    • 65,793,284 euros on September 27, 2013 in Luxembourg;
    • 55,609,411 euros on May 16, 2008 in Carinthia, Austria.

    Changes from February 2020

Changes from the drawing on February 4, 2020:

    • The jackpot cap was increased to initially 200 million euros from February 2020. After this cap of 200 million euros has been reached and the jackpot has been won or forcibly paid out, the cap for future drawings will be increased in 10 million euros increments so that next time it can reach 210 million euros, and so on, until the new maximum value of 250 million euros has been achieved.
    • The number of Superjackpots will be increased from two to three drawings per year.
    • The jackpots rise faster, especially in the double-digit million range (when drawing 1 to 5 of a jackpot cycle, 50% of the winnings now go to 1st place, instead of 43.2% previously).
    • The price per tip remains the same. This is financed by changing the percentage shares of the profit classes in the total winnings (classes 2 to 13 receive less, class 1 and booster funds more). In addition, the national variants get less from the stake: € 0.76 of € 2.50 instead of € 0.85 of € 2.50 before.

    Difference between Eurojackpot and Euromillions

The game principle of the two European lotteries is very similar. The biggest difference is that in Euromillions 2 are drawn from 12 star numbers, in comparison with Eurojackpot it is 2 out of 10 Euro numbers. With the exception of Spain, no country takes part in both lotteries. The participating countries of Eurojackpot include Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, which have a total of 269 million inhabitants . The size of the jackpots also differs. The minimum jackpot for Eurojackpot is 10 million euros and a maximum of 90 million euros, the amount of the starting jackpot for Euromillions is 17 million euros (10 million euros from May 21, 2004 up to and including February 25, 2005/15 million euros from 1. March 2005 up to and including September 23, 2016) and the maximum highest jackpot at 190 million euros.

The large multi-state lotteries have very high jackpots compared to national state lotteries, but also lower chances of winning, whereby the product range is also being diversified more and more and additional offers are coming onto the market.

    National variants (included)

From July 2018, the price of a tip was raised from 2.20 euros to 2.50 euros. The national "additional games" of the participating countries are financed with the price difference.

    Belgium

In Belgium you get an additional winning code for the game “My Bonus” for each combination played. Under all winning codes, 200x 500 euros will be played on Tuesdays and 400x 500 euros on Fridays, with other amounts (e.g. 10 euros or 100,000 euros) at irregular intervals.

    France

In France you get an additional winning code for the game "My Million" for each combination played. Among all the winning codes on the respective day of the drawing, a winning code will be determined to which 1,000,000 euros is allocated.

    Ireland

In Ireland you get an additional winning code for the game "Ireland Raffle" for each combination played. 10 winning codes are determined from all winning codes on the respective drawing day, each of which is EUR 5,000.

    Luxembourg

In Luxembourg you take part in the "ExtraLux" game with the same 5 numbers (out of 50) for each combination played. There are three prize categories here. 5 correct numbers win 100,000 euros, 4 correct numbers win 500 euros and 3 correct numbers win 10 euros.

    Austria

Since July 2018, as part of the “Austria Bonus”, an additional 100,000 euros per drawing has been raffled among all participating Austrian tips. At the same time, the price for each tip was raised from 2.20 euros to 2.50 euros; the price difference is justified solely by a contribution of 30 cents for said Austrian additional raffle.

    Portugal

In Portugal you get an additional winning code for the game "M1lhão" for each combination played. Among all the winning codes from the previous Tuesday and Friday draws, a winning code will be determined on Friday, to which 1,000,000 euros will be allocated. More than one code is determined at irregular intervals.

    Switzerland

If you place a Euromillions tip in Switzerland, you will automatically take part in the separate “Second Chance” lottery with the same numbers chosen. Five out of 50 numbers are drawn, and with each drawing at least 250,000 francs are paid out to those who have three, four or five correct numbers in this second drawing. The CH surcharge for this is CHF 1.00.

    Spain

In Spain you get an additional winning code for the game "El Millón" for each combination played. Among all the winning codes on the respective day of the drawing, a winning code will be determined to which 1,000,000 euros is allocated.

National variants / additional games (against multiple stakes)

Furthermore, some countries offer optional variants or additional games against multiple use :

    France

In France, you can take part in the “Étoile Plus” game for an additional EUR 1.00 per combination played. The same 2 star numbers (out of 12) for every combination played take part. There are then additional prize classes (e.g. 0 numbers, but 1 or 2 stars correct) or the prizes of the normal prize classes with correct star numbers increase.

    Ireland

In Ireland you can take part in the “Euromillions Plus” game for an additional stake of 1.00 euros per combination played. The same 5 numbers (out of 50) for every combination played take part. There are three prize categories here. 5 correct numbers win 500,000 euros, 4 correct numbers win 2,000 euros and 3 correct numbers win 20 euros.

    Luxembourg

In Luxembourg you can also take part in the “Joker” final number lottery on the Euromillions tickets for € 2.00 per tip. Two tips are possible per ticket. Here a 6-digit winning number is drawn. The more correct final digits you have, the higher the profits. These range from 2.00 euros (only the last number is correct) to 500,000 euros (the complete number matches).
