The specialist journal Europa-Archiv ( EA for short ), now known as Internationale Politik (IP), was a German-language specialist publication for European, political, economic and cultural issues that appeared twice a month. The authors were renowned scientists, politicians and publicists from home and abroad.

The magazine was founded by Wilhelm Cornides , who also served as editor for many years.

Focus of the magazine

The focus of the magazine was on the documentation and publication of European-relevant topics and documents in German.

Editing

For many years Wilhelm Cornides himself was the editor . From the beginning of the 1950s the EA was published by Wilhelm Cornides in conjunction with the Institute for European Politics and Economy . The German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP) took over the European Archives as its self-published organ in 1955. From 1967 Wolfgang Wagner took over the responsible editorial office.

In 1995 the editor was transferred to Werner Weidenfeld . In 1995 the EA was renamed International Politics (IP).

publisher

The journal European Archives was originally from the publisher Europa-Archiv , Oberursel ( Taunus in Frankfurt am Main ) installed . The original editorial archive of the Europa-Archiv magazine ( Europa-Archiv publishing house) had no special name. The editorial archive was incorporated into the library and documentation center of the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP) in 1955 .

The German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP) then appeared for a time as a publisher of the EA itself . In 1972 the Verlag für Internationale Politik GmbH (VIP), Bonn took over the publishing house .

editorial staff

The editor in charge was Wilhelm Cornides himself in 1949. In 1949 (2nd year) the main editorial office was extended to include Hermann Volle and Gertrud Becker (Gertrud Silber-Becker). Subsequently, the main editorial department (editor-in-chief) was exclusively with Hermann Volle until 1986. In 1986 Jochen Thies took over the editor-in-chief and from 1993 was Angelika Volle.

Development of the Europa-Archiv magazine

The structure (focus) of the EA was subject to change in the long period of publication, especially in the first few years.

construction

The structure below was basically to be found in the EA, but not included in every journal. Accordingly, certain sections (especially in the first years) could be omitted or added (examples).

Main topics

The documentation on special key topics was published independently for the first time in issue 2/1947. The subject of the first special publication (volume 1) with a print run of 10,000 was the report of the American military government (edited by Arthur Settel): The German economy since Potsdam . A (originally not public) work report from the US Military Government's Economic Department.

Publication interval, scope, edition and format

The EA was published monthly from July 1946 with an edition of 10,000, from 1947 in an edition of 12,000 (information according to the editors). From 1949 the EA appeared twice a month (circulation still 12,000 copies).

Originally it was planned that the EA should consist of only 48 pages ( technical reasons were given ). However, this self-limitation could not be maintained for long and as early as the 2nd year the publisher continued to postulate the will to this limitation , but did not comply with it.

Also for technical reasons, duplicate issues were sometimes issued.

An annual register as a subject and person register was published separately at the beginning of the following year and attached to an edition of the EA.

In the editions up to the beginning of the 1960s, the EA had the final format of approx. 22 cm × 30 cm (width × height) or, from 1949, a little smaller and then a standard book format.

particularities

The year count began with the publication of the first magazine in July 1946 and ended in July of the following year. From the January 1948 edition, the year count was linked to the beginning of the year. The years 1946 include pages 1 to 668 and 1947 pages 669 to 1060.

The EA was published with the permission of the American occupation authorities under the publishing license number: US-W 2007 and was originally delivered by R. Oldenbourg Verlag ( Munich ).

Distribution in Austria was carried out by the Verlag für Geschichte und Politik , Vienna , from 1949 onwards .

Initial issue price

The first edition price was 4 RM and from 1949 2 DM / 6 ATS for the single issue.

Further development

In 1995 the Europa-Archiv, magazine for international politics in its 50th year, was renamed International Politics (IP).

The year count was retained even after the renaming.
