The Eurostadion was a planned football stadium in the Belgian municipality of Grimbergen in Flanders . It was to be built in the immediate vicinity of the Brussels capital region , which also owns the building site. 62,613 seats were planned in the stands.

The stadium was originally supposed to be built as part of the application of the Belgian Football Association and Belgium was promised to host four matches of the 2020 European Football Championship . However, when Belgium, as the only host country, was unable to implement the plans on time and the planned completion date for the stadium could no longer be met, the event in the Eurostadion on December 7, 2017 was canceled by UEFA .

The Eurostadion was to become the future home ground of the Belgian national football team and RSC Anderlecht . In contrast to the stadium on the Heysel Plateau , the King Baudouin Stadium , it was not to receive an athletics facility. In addition, a shopping center, service company and a convention center were to be integrated into the stadium. The operator was to receive more than four million euros annually from the city of Brussels for the construction and operation of the building for thirty years.

After delays in planning and discussions about financing and with the project developer, the Flemish Ghelamco Group, the deadline for the start of construction was initially postponed to 2019 in 2015. In 2017 RSC Anderlecht left the project. Following the decision by UEFA not to host any 2020 European Championship matches in Belgium, the Flemish Environment Minister Joke Schauvliege stated that the environmental impact assessment was negative and that no building permit could be obtained.

In March 2019, the Belgian Football Association finally announced that it no longer wanted to build a new stadium, but wanted to renovate the King Baudouin Stadium for 150 to 200 million euros by 2022 and redesign it as the "Golden Generation Arena", in memory of the most successful generation of footballers in the country, who finished third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In the new arena, athletics should continue to be possible and the Memorial van Damme should take place.
