Eusebius Wirdeier (* 1950 in Dormagen ) is a German photographer, graphic artist, sculptor and publisher.

In his photographs he focuses on topics from the Rhineland. He published documentary series on the Rhenish opencast mining areas around Garzweiler , the demolition of the Josef Haubrich Kunsthalle, the construction of the north-south light rail and the remains of the destroyed city ​​archive . Two photo books about Cologne's district have been added since 2014. In addition to regular solo and group exhibitions, his work is represented in the Museum Ludwig , the Cologne City Museum , the LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn and other museums and private collections.

Wirdeier was born in Dormagen in 1950 and has been studying at the Cologne factory schools since 1967 ( TH Köln, Department of Art and Design). Since 1968 he had his first solo and group exhibitions with drawings, objects and installations and began his photographic work. From 1970 to 1973 he studied sculpture with Anton Berger . In the 70s and 80s he took part in numerous theater projects ( The True Anton, together with Richard Rogler and Heinrich Pachl ) and book projects. In addition, from autumn 1969 he developed together with Rolf Henke, Tita Gaehme , Dorothee Joachim and Jens Hagen in Cologne the successful underground magazine Ana & Bela , which, as the "kölnisches Volksblatt", became a forerunner of the later alternative city newspapers Kölner Volksblatt and StadtRevue .

As a freelance artist, editor and book designer, Wirdeier designed the books kölsch? - Heimatphotographie as well as 1991 Alaaf anyway ! - Cologne Rose Monday for the Gulf War , each time in connection with an exhibition. In 1994 he was appointed to the German Society for Photography .

From 2001 to 2004 Wirdeier held a teaching position for “Photography in Architecture” at the Department of Architecture, Design, Art at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

Together with Wolfgang Niedecken , Wirdeier realized several book projects, including 1996 the illustrated text volume noh un noh - texts and photographs from Cologne and 2003 the title Much happened (with Wim Wenders ). Together with Barbara Räderscheidt, he has edited three issues of the Freio periodical since 2009 .

A photo exhibition in the Cologne City Museum from 2009 to 2010 showed Willeier's work under the motto Cologne as it is parallel to August Sander's pre-war photographs (Cologne as it was) .

In cooperation with the Cologne-Sülzer children's home and on the occasion of the abandonment of the children's home area on the Sülzgürtel , Wirdeier developed an exhibition on the history of the facility in 2012, which was shown as a traveling exhibition at various locations within Cologne. At the same time he designed and photographed the exhibition catalog History (s) of the Sülz Children's Home 1917–2012. From Cologne orphanage to Ki d S.

As part of the LVR theme year 1914 - In the middle of Europe. The Rhineland and the First World War , Wirdeier curated the double exhibition Modern World War I Madhouse , which dealt with psychiatry and art before, during and after the First World War.

With his photo books Ursula + Jean (2014) and Severin renovated (2017), for which he accompanied the renovation of the Romanesque church of St. Severin for a year and a half, Wirdeier once again placed a focus on long-term photographic documentation. 2019 he was for his photographic work, particularly in Severinsviertel with Severin's citizens Price excellent.
