history

On January 4, 1820, the forerunner of the museum, the Museum of Rhenish-Westphalian Antiquities , was founded as the “Museum of Antiquities” by decree of the Prussian State Chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg . The first conductor was the same time as Director of the Department for antiquities in the Rhineland and Westphalia appointed William Dorow . The actual Provincial Museum was founded in 1874 by Ernst aus'm Weerth and Hermann Schaaffhausen , among others .

In 1877 the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier was founded as a sister museum for the Moselle part of the Rhineland . The foundation building, which was destroyed in World War II, was replaced in 1967 by a pioneering new building by Rainer Schell .

From 1997 to 2003 the museum was rebuilt and the collections reorganized. In 2003 the museum was reopened as a themed museum after extensive redesign .

The Stone Age area was redesigned in mid-2010 . Among other things, it is dedicated to the fossil Neandertal 1 , which has been kept in the museum since 1877 , the type specimen of the Neanderthal man .

In June 2014 the new permanent exhibition Celts in the Rhineland was opened. She presents u. a. the unique finds from the graves of the princess von Waldalgesheim , the princess von Wallerfangen and the prince von Weiskirchen, the gold treasure from Hambach-Niederzier, a model of an Eburonian settlement, the chariot grave from Bell and the Pfalzfeld column .

Further highlights in the museum's permanent exhibition are: the Late Ice Age Oberkassel people 12,000 years BC. Chr., The Neolithic fountain of Kückhoven (5089 BC), the 3500 year old Fritzdorfer cup , the cenotaph of the Roman centurion Marcus Caelius ( Caeliusstein ) who fell in the Varus Battle in 9 AD , a unique, slate Roman equestrian helmet and a Roman silver cup from Xanten-Lüttingen with a wedding depiction, the Franconian grave stele from Niederdollendorf , the so-called Gustorfer choir screens and the Pietà Röttgen from the 14th century.

Directors

Museum building

A separate building was erected on Colmantstrasse from 1889 to 1892 according to plans by State Building Councilor Clemens Guinbert; the construction management was carried out by the Bonn government master builder Karl Thoma . The opening of the new building took place on July 12, 1893. In 1907/08, the government builder Heinrich Roettgen (1863-1932) added a two-storey three-wing building to Bachstrasse and an adjacent building for the state curator (Bachstrasse 9). In 1934/35 the skylight hall of the extension building was redesigned. During the Second World War , the "foundation building" on Colmantstrasse was destroyed in the Allied aerial warfare in the most devastating bombing raid on Bonn on October 18, 1944, while the extension on Bachstrasse was restored. From 1963 to 1967, a four-storey new building based on an architectural competition on Colmantstrasse was built on the basis of a design and planning by Rainer Schell in Wiesbaden to replace the destroyed building ; at the same time, the older extension on Bachstrasse was purified and the interior was aligned with the new building.

The structural expansion and renovation of the museum from 1997 to 2003 was carried out according to the designs of the Stuttgart architects around the architect Knut Lohrer. The building was adapted to current museological and ecological standards. The construction time, initially planned for three years, had doubled and the costs calculated at the equivalent of 45 million euros rose to around 80 million euros. A further renovation of the foyer and ground floor as well as the installation of a central elevator should be completed by early 2020.

Permanent exhibition

The museum's permanent exhibition is grouped according to the following topics: On the trail of secrets , From the gods to God , Rhineland scene , From survival to beautiful life , power and powers , The Rhineland and the world and From primeval to urban landscapes . Here - regardless of the chronological context - masterpieces of art are presented next to simple everyday objects and sacred works in the vicinity of everyday items. The museum also has a collection of graphics and photos as well as a coin cabinet. In the »Stone Age area«, one of the best prehistoric collections in Europe is presented alongside the original skeleton of the Neanderthal. The compilation of the exhibits shows the evolution of man from the development of the upright gait to the settling down to the Celts on the move to high culture.
