Harald von Petrikovits

Harald von Petrikovits (born August 8, 1911 as Harald Friedrich Albert von Petrikovits in Römerstadt , † October 29, 2010 in Bonn ) was a German archaeologist from the Roman provincial district .

Harald von Petrikovits studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Vienna , especially with Josef Keil and Rudolf Egger . There he received his doctorate with an unprinted thesis on the religious history of the Adriatic countries in Roman times . His first work dealt with the history of Roman religion. Excavation activities in Carinthia and Upper Austria followed. In 1935 he came to Germany and in the same year he worked for the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute and had been a research assistant at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn from 1936 . During the Second World War he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and had to work in a quarry. Since 1951 he worked again at the Bonn State Museum. From October 1958 to August 1973 he was its director. The main task as director was to rebuild the parts of the museum that were destroyed in the war. Under his leadership, the institution became a European leader in Roman archeology. Since 1961 he has taught as honorary professor for provincial archeology and the history of the Rhineland in Roman times at the University of Bonn .

His main research interests were archeology, history and culture of the Roman provinces . With his representation The Roman Rhineland. Archaeological research since 1945 he presented an overview of the military, settlement, economic and religious history of Roman Lower Germany . For the realcyclopedia of classical antiquity he wrote articles about the emperor Macrinus or about the legionary camp Vetera near Xanten . He founded the series " Epigraphic Studies ". Petrikovits worked on a Roman cultural history until the end of his life.

Petrikovits was awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. Petrikovits was a member of the Roman-Germanic Commission , the German and Austrian Archaeological Institute , the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , the British Academy and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . Petrikovits was a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit , the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and an honorary member of the Bonn Art Association . The University of Würzburg awarded him an honorary doctorate.
