from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eustasius , French Eustache or Eustace (* around 560 ; † April 2, 629 in Luxeuil-les-Bains , France ) was a holy abbot and missionary of the Bavarians .

Life

He was a student of St. Columban , whom he accompanied on a missionary trip to Bregenz . After Columban's expulsion from the Luxeuil monastery , Eustasius became abbot there in 615. He evangelized the Waraskers on the Doubs and, together with Agilus , undertook mission trips to the Bavarians .

After the Synod of Mâcon in 627, the monks of Luxeuil abandoned the Irish Scottish forms of worship and adopted the Gallican liturgy . Since Eustasius required strict adherence to the rule of the order, there were repeated conflicts with the monks of his monastery.

After his death he was buried in Luxeuil-les-Bains, later his relics came to Vergaville ( Lorraine ) and Seitingen-Oberflacht (Eustasius Chapel), where he is venerated as "Anastasius" or "Anstett". The Eyres-Moncube Benedictine Abbey is called Notre-Dame Saint-Eustase .

Remembrance day

His feast day is April 2nd .

Since he is said to have healed the blind, feverish and possessed, he is invoked as the patron saint of the mad and possessed . He is depicted as an abbot with a staff and a book who overturns idols or heals the possessed.
