Eva Altmann (born December 17, 1903 in Berlin ; † March 1, 1991 ) was an economist and founding rector of the College of Planning in the GDR .

Life

Eva Altmann was the daughter of a businessman. After studying economics, she became involved in the communist youth movement and joined the KPD in 1923 . She married and had a son, the father moved to the Soviet Union in the early 1930s, the son stayed with her and died in 1947.

During the time of National Socialism , she was temporarily held in prison.

In the first years after the Second World War , she was mainly active in education policy. In 1950 she received the government contract to found the College of Planning Economics, from which the College of Economics developed a little later.

With a small group of scientists and other employees, she laid the foundations for the most important economic training and research facility in the GDR in the 1950s. Your courses, especially the “capital seminars”, played a large part in the theoretical training of the students in the first degree courses and in the training of the teaching staff at the new university. In addition, she conducted research on theoretical problems of the reproduction of capital in the Federal Republic ("West Germany under the laws of the reproduction of capital").

At their instigation, the basic Marxist-Leninist course was set up as a compulsory part of the course at the College of Planning Economics before it was introduced throughout the GDR.

In April 1953, the Central Committee of the SED issued her a warning because one of the university lecturers had dared to criticize a paper by Stalin, who had died a few weeks earlier, in a lecture . After handing over the management of the university to a successor in 1956, she devoted herself to the training of aspirants , especially foreign students, and she led young scientists to doctorate .

Altmann received numerous state awards, including the Clara Zetkin Medal in 1957 , the Karl Marx Order in 1973 and the Gold Medal for the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1979 .
