Eva Gouel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eva Gouel , née Marcelle Humbert (* 1885 ; † December 14, 1915 ), was the second companion of Pablo Picasso at the beginning of his cubist synthetic period.

meaning

At the end of 1911 Picasso met Marcelle Humbert in Paris . In May 1912, Picasso and his first partner, Fernande Olivier, separated . On May 18, he traveled with Marcelle Humbert, whom he had taken from his friend, the painter Louis Marcoussis , via Avignon to Céret in the Pyrenees . But since Fernande was also expected, he drove back to Avignon with Marcelle on June 21 and rented the villa "Les Clochettes" in Sorgues- sur-l ' Ouvèze , a small town north of Avignon. At the end of July-beginning of August 1912, Picasso's friend and colleague Braque and his wife Marcelle also arrived in Sorgues, who rented a house in the neighborhood. Presumably because both women had the first name Marcelle , Picasso called Marcelle Humbert from then on Eva . On September 23, Picasso and Eva Gouel left Avignon and, having arrived in Paris, set up an apartment at 242 Boulevard de Raspail.

In mid-December the couple traveled to Ceret and Barcelona for a month and also spent spring and August 1913 together in Ceret; they went on trips to Figueres and Girona . From June 17 to November 17, 1914, Eva and Picasso lived in Avignon, where they rented a “Spanish-looking” house at 14 rue Saint Bernard.

Picasso did not depict Eva directly in his Cubist pictures, but in word fragments. "His objects are his love affairs, he has never painted an object to which he was not in an emotional relationship." Eva appears in his pictures in fragments like J'aime Eva , Jolie Eva or Ma Jolie , the gallery owner reports Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in his book Aesthetic Considerations from 1968.

At the beginning of 1915 Eva Gouel fell ill with tuberculosis and was operated on on February 15th. But her health did not improve significantly. She died on December 14th in Auteuil Hospital . Picasso was deeply affected by her death, and it plunged him into depression. A small group of friends, including Max Jacob and Juan Gris , accompanied Picasso to the cemetery. Picasso soon created the pencil drawings Eva morte and Eva sur son lit de mort . Picasso found solace in Gaby Depeyre , who lived near his studio in Montmartre. The young woman did not return Picasso's love, however, and married the American artist Herbert Lespinasse the following year.
