Evangelist Luke, fol. 101 BC

The Gospels of Saint-Riquier , also called Gospels from Centula or Gospels in Abbeville , is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript . It was created during Charlemagne's lifetime , probably shortly before 800, at his court school in the Aachen royal palace and is one of the most outstanding examples of early Carolingian book illumination .

The gospel book consists of 198 purple parchment sheets in the format 355 x 247  mm . The text pages are written on with gold ink; the texts of the four Gospels ( fol.  1–188) are in uncial script , the capitula evangeliorum at the end (fol. 189 v –198 r ) in lower case . In addition to the full-page portraits of the four evangelists, Matthew (fol. 17 v ), Mark (fol. 66 v ), Lukas (fol. 101 v ) and Johannes (fol. 153 v ), the artfully decorated canon tables (fol. 10 r –16 v ) as well as richly decorated initials as large as a page .

The manuscript was intended as a gift for Angilbert († 814), the lay abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Riquier and lover of Charlemagne's daughter Bertha . Angilbert donated the gospel book together with numerous other manuscripts to the library of his monastery, where it is recorded in an inventory catalog in 831. Today the manuscript is kept in nearby Abbeville ( Bibliothèque Municipale , Ms. 4).

The Gospels, whose text and design are closely related to the so-called Coronation Gospels, which were also created at the Aachen court school , influenced the West Franconian scriptories of the 9th century in particular .
