Evangelical Church (Ittlingen)
The Evangelical Church in Ittlingen , a community in the west of the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg , was originally built in the Middle Ages . The church is a protected architectural monument .
location
The church stands in the northeast of the village, between the main street and Mühlgasse, on the church square, which is enclosed by a narrow ring of buildings. It is built on a loess clay terrace that rises from the valley floor through which the Elsenz flows just a good hundred meters further east to the north. The building is roughly east, the tower is on the west side.
history
The original fortified church was in the middle of the cemetery and both were surrounded by a high defensive wall with a forecourt and moat. In 1622 the church was damaged during the conquest of the village under Tilly during the Thirty Years War . In 1666 the church burned down and was then rebuilt. As the church had become too small, the cemetery was closed and in 1732 the nave with the choir was extended to the east. At the same time the defensive walls were put down and the trenches filled. The west tower , which is essentially Romanesque , has been preserved.
In 1828 the church was expanded. It was extensively renovated in 1988.
