history

inside view

Duke Friedrich Franz I decided together with the doctor Samuel Gottlieb Vogel from Rostock in 1793 to open the bathing season for that year and the future at the “Holy Dam”. The buildings required for this were erected in the following years. People continued to live in Doberan, and church visits also took place in Doberan Minster .

In order to change this, the catholic Herz-Jesu-Kapelle was built at the instigation of the bath manager Hermann von Suckow . Suckow asked Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. to build a Protestant church as well. On July 14, 1893, the Grand Duke came to Heiligendamm from his summer residence in Gelbensande . To commemorate the founding of the first German seaside resort 100 years earlier, he donated a place on the south side of the forest of Heiligendamm, the playground of his childhood, for the construction of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and an amount of 10,000 marks . The design came from the architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel , who was also the site manager. The church was solemnly consecrated on July 31, 1904.

During the Second World War, a military hospital was set up in Heiligendamm, as evidenced by the graves of civilians on the left in front of the church. At the beginning of August 1943 the last service for the time being took place in the Protestant church. After a probable emergency bombing by British planes, the entire forest area around the church was full of duds, and no one could get to the church safely. It was not until August 5, 1951 that the church, which had been completely robbed in the post-war years, could be consecrated again for services.
