The Evangelical Church Jugenheim (also: Bergkirche Jugenheim ) is a church in the southern Hessian community of Jugenheim .

Architecture and history

church

Taking into account a previous building from 1263, a small hall church with a square choir , sacristy and tower was built around 1480 . In 1856 this church was enlarged and provided with a semicircular closed choir. In 1575 the tower was raised by one floor and crowned with a pointed, buckled helmet . Inside the simple hall building has a flat beamed ceiling ; the L-shaped wooden gallery running around two sides was renewed in 1855. The pulpit from 1751 is an octagonal coffered cube on a wooden column and has a small round-arched opening next to the triumphal arch . The parapet of the connecting platform is connected to the cube, which creates the peculiar pulpit shape. The crucifix in the triumphal arch was carved in 1739 by the sculptor Eckhardt from Darmstadt .

The church's furnishings also include a historical font made of black marble , donated by Prince Alexander in 1869 and made by the Darmstadt stonemason Best. In an arched wall niche on the tower there is a late medieval relief sculpture showing the Archangel Michael killing the dragon . The foundation plate is embedded in the side wall of the church . It was built in 1263, but dates from the second half of the 15th century and was probably made according to an older plate or document when the church was first expanded .

The church, including its furnishings, is a cultural monument for artistic reasons and for reasons of local history .

Churchyard

In the former churchyard , fortified by high retaining walls , there are seven historically significant tombs that are worth protecting for local historical reasons , including the tomb of the miller Bernius from 1756, the grave slab of court preacher Johann August Stark from the mid-19th century and a wrought-iron grave cross from the 19th century.

The Evangelical Church Community Seeheim-Jugenheim is part of the Darmstadt-Land deanery of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau .
