Ev. St. Laurentius Church in Hohenhameln

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Laurentius Church in Hohenhameln is the town's landmark. The two tops of her tower are also the coat of arms of the community. The parish today belongs to the south-west region of the Peine parish .

history

The parish of St. Lawrence was in the 9th or 10th century during the Christianization of Saxony of Hildesheim founded out. The patronage of St. Laurentius indicates a great age. The church had been an archdeaconate since 1225 . By this time at the latest, the Romanesque predecessor of today's church was completed. The impressive double tower front comes from this building.

During the Reformation century, Hohenhameln belonged to Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel as a result of the Hildesheim collegiate feud and became Lutheran with the entire duchy . This did not change after the restitution of the Großer Stift . However, the bishop had a small Catholic church built in the village in 1712 , which was also named St. Laurentius and was replaced by today's neo-baroque building in 1912/13 .

In the 18th century, the Romanesque nave of the old Laurentiuskirche, which had long since become too small and dilapidated for the growing community, was demolished. In 1778 today's baroque quarry stone church was inaugurated, which impresses with its largely original furnishings and especially with the ceiling paintings . In 2005/06 the interior of the church was extensively restored.
