Catholic Church of St. Lawrence

The Catholic St. Lawrence Church in Hohenhameln (Clauener street 2) 1912-13, designed by Richard Herzig built and, most Laurentiustag, the August 10, 1913 by Bishop Adolf Bertram ordained .

history

The old Hohenhameln Archidiakonatskirche St. Laurentius had become Lutheran during the Reformation . After the restitution of the Great Hildesheim Monastery in 1643, the Jesuits in Peine began collecting the Catholics and in 1650 with the celebration of St. Mass initially in private rooms, then from 1651 in a hall converted into a chapel, from 1711 in a newly built, simple baroque church designed by Johann Just, Stade. The takeover of the Laurentius patronage was a counter-Reformation signal that has not seldom led to confusion since then. Construction of today's church began in 1912, as the previous church had become too small for the larger parish and its state of construction was dilapidated.

In 1969 St. Laurentius was given a branch church in Adenstedt for a short time with St. Thomas , but this was soon transferred to the parish of St. Bernward in Groß Ilsede . Since September 1st, 2008 the St. Laurentius Church has also been part of the parish of St. Bernward; today it is the westernmost church in the Braunschweig deanery .
