from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of St. Thomas was the Catholic church in Adenstedt , a district of Ilsede in the Peine district in Lower Saxony . Most recently the church belonged to the parish of St. Bernward with its seat in Groß Ilsede , in the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church was named after the holy apostle Thomas and was located in Amselweg 15. Today St. Bernward in Groß Ilsede, about five kilometers away, is the closest Catholic church.

history

With the introduction of the Reformation , the residents of Adenstedt became Evangelical Lutheran. From around 1946, as a result of the expulsion from the east , Catholics began to settle again in large numbers in Adenstedt and the surrounding villages. They were initially looked after by the parish of St. Laurentius in Hohenhameln , the services in Adenstedt took place in the Protestant church. As early as 1948/49 there were plans to found their own parish in Adenstedt, but this was rejected by the majority of the then 600 Catholics in Adenstedt. In 1966 a church building association was founded in Adenstedt. Construction of St. Thomas Church began in August 1968 and the foundation stone was laid on September 21, 1968 by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker. The consecration by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen followed on June 17, 1969 . It was initially a branch church of the parish Hohenhameln, its catchment area included Adenstedt and Solschen . From November 1, 1969, the church was looked after by the parish of St. Bernward in Groß Ilsede, and on April 1, 1971, the church was also attached to the parish of St. Bernward under canon law. In 1986 the neighboring property was acquired to enlarge the church garden and create parking spaces.

In 2008 it was decided by the diocese to give up the church due to declining financial resources, but also the lack of priests. On March 1st, 2009 the church was profaned by Vicar General Werner Schreer , in March 2010 it was demolished. To date (as of April 2014) the property has not been rebuilt.

architecture

The church was built as a prefabricated concrete church with a free-standing tower, it was around 88 meters above sea level . A rectory also belonged to it.
