Evangelical Church Dossenbach

The Evangelical Church Dossenbach in the suburb of the same name in the municipality of Schwörstadt in the district of Lörrach is a neo-Gothic building from the 1850s. The previous church was destroyed by fire. The first written mention of a church in the village dates back to the second half of the 14th century.

history

prehistory

According to uncertain assumptions, the Franks could have built their own church in Dossenbach as early as the 6th or 7th century . A veneration of Saint Pelagius , to whom this church was later consecrated, was promoted by the Diocese of Constance as early as the 10th century . The first written mention of a clergyman ("G. de Tossinbah plebanus") was only in 1247. The church ("ecclesia Tossenbach") was mentioned between 1360 and 1370 for the first time. Nothing is known about the dimensions and architecture of this church. Dossenbach only converted to the Protestant faith with the introduction of the Reformation in Markgräflerland in 1556 and lost its independence two years later when the church was declared a subsidiary church of Maulburg in 1558 .

Remodeling and repair

Damage caused by the Thirty Years' War was repaired several times in the second half of the 17th century. It is known that the church had an octagonal, very pointed roof turret made of wood. While their condition must have been good at the beginning of the 18th century, it deteriorated noticeably over the course of the following decades. For the necessary repair work, the ground plan and elevation were taken in 1761, so that the exterior of the church is known. The choir and nave were therefore combined in a rectangular building with a gable roof . The roof turret was attached above the choir. The restoration work, which ended in 1762, does not have to have been satisfactory, so that it had to be reworked again in 1765 and the church tower was also slightly increased. Nevertheless, in 1767 there were calls for the building to be enlarged. It was not until 1807 that the church was fundamentally redesigned according to plans by the builder Wilhelm Frommel . However, this church fell victim to a fire on June 16, 1856.

Today's new building

One year after the fire, the construction of the church was already being considered, and in 1853 Dossenbach was again raised to an independent parish . The new church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style between 1855 and 1857; he was consecrated on May 25, 1857.

A new altar was erected in 1950. While only the windows and the interior painting were renewed in 1954, the church was completely renovated between 1976 and 1978, when the roof of the bell tower was replaced by a copper roof in addition to a new sacristy .

The Dossenbach church stands on an elevated hillside on the town's thoroughfare and is surrounded by a cemetery. The rectangular nave has five long, pointed arched windows on each of its long sides. The polygonal choir is closed by a lower hipped roof. The main portal is located on the southwest side, with a rose window above it . The bell tower rises from the roof gable , from which small gable triangles rise on each side. The roof forms a slender pyramid , which is crowned by a tower ball and a cross.
