The Protestant parish church

The parish church of Kirchdorf, the parish hall and the adjoining pastor's apartment were built in the 1950s. More than 120 young Christians from 16 nations were also involved in the work, who supported the establishment of the church as part of a “work camp”. The inauguration took place on October 14, 1956 by Superintendent Wilhelm Mensing-Braun .

From January 2015, the refurbishment of church and rectory began. The interior and exterior were completely renewed by mid-2016, in particular the bell tower and the roof structure. The “Good Shepherd” formerly on the outer wall is no longer visible. The Protestant parish church is in the town of Kirchdorf directly on the B 138 Pyhrnpass road .

History of the Protestant Parish

In the Kirchdorf area, an evangelical preacher was already active from 1525 to 1527. A friend of Martin Luther, the reformer Michael Stifel (also: Michael Styfel), received the order to preach from the Upper Austrian noble family of Jörger von Tollet . In Michel village situated castle Altpernstein recalls the located above the castle gate Prädikantenstube it. In the 1550s, the vast majority of the population was Protestant. In November 1583, the Lutheran pastor of Kirchdorf, Matthäus Hofmandl, who used today's Catholic parish church of Kirchdorf an der Krems as a Protestant parish church, died. His tombstone survived the centuries and found a new home next to the current Protestant church from the post-war period. As a stone monument made of marble with a Latin inscription, it documents the continuity of the community with the history of the Reformation.

In the course of the Counter-Reformation , the political situation for the Protestants visibly worsened, but the Protestant mountain church Klaus was still consecrated in 1618 . After the Upper Austrian Peasants' War of 1626, however, the official class church structure practically ceased to exist. The Lutheran teaching was pushed into the underground and therefore lived on as secret Protestantism . In October 1781, Emperor Joseph II proclaimed the patent of tolerance , thus ending the time of crypto-Protestantism in Austria . The prerequisite for a prayer house was at least 100 families or 500 individuals who declared themselves to be Evangelicals. In the period up to 1795, 48 “tolerance communities” were established in Austria. For the area between Wels and Spital am Pyhrn, pastoral care was essentially provided by the Neukematen tolerance community founded in 1783.

Since around 1890, in the course of the construction of the Pyhrnbahn , more and more Protestant families have settled in the district. The Protestant Christians recorded a sharp increase in the war years 1944/45 due to the German-speaking refugees from Southeast Europe. On September 1, 1950, Pastor Erich Schneider came from Transylvania to the Spital am Pyhrn camp, who played a key role in setting up pastoral care. Windischgarsten has had a Protestant church since 1951, and Kirchdorf received a sacred building in 1956.

In 1957, the church was separated from the Neukematen parish and the Evangelical Parish AB Kirchdorf – Windischgarsten was founded. The parish office is located in Kirchdorf, the Windischgarsten site is run as a subsidiary parish. The Klaus Castle, located in the parish parish, has been home to the evangelical-ecclesiastical "Mission Community of Torchbearers" since 1963. This expanded the castle into an international youth camp and education center, and also supports the parish of Kirchdorf in many areas on a voluntary basis. In 1980 a work for people with disabilities in the region was founded under the name "Diakonie in der Gemeinde (DIG)", which is now active in four locations as a diaconal branch of Schloss Klaus with good connections to the Evangelical Parish. At Adelsmayrhof near Ried im Traunkreis, a social-psychiatric residential community was founded by the association "Leben mit Zukunft" in 1988, and since 2012 this care facility has been organizationally integrated into the association "Diakonie in der Gemeinde".

The Protestant Bishop of Austria Michael Bünker , the Upper Austrian Superintendent Gerold Lehner and the Director of Diakonie Austria Michael Chalupka came to Kirchdorf for the ceremony on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Schloss Klaus (1963–2013) . From 2015 the parish church in Kirchdorf was completely renovated.

Protestant institutions in the Kirchdorf district

The Evangelical Parish AB Kirchdorf-Windischgarsten owns the parish church in the district capital Kirchdorf an der Krems and the Evangelical Church Windischgarsten of the subsidiary Windischgarsten. Further services are held in the district nursing homes and in the Hinterstoder preaching station if required . The seat of the Protestant parish office is Kirchdorf.

The association Schloss Klaus - Diakonie in der Gemeinde (DIG) is a full member of Diakonie Österreich . Under the abbreviation DIG , the association carries out diaconal work for disabled people. A day care center, a residential building and a shop are operated at the Windischgarsten location , and a second day care center is located in Kirchdorf. The Adelsmayrhof in Ried im Traunkreis is a renovated square courtyard that is used as a social-psychiatric residential community with an integrated daily structure. A total of almost 90 childcare places are available.

The evangelical-ecclesiastical association Missionsgemeinschaft der Torchträger - Schloss Klaus operates the approximately 150 guest beds in Klaus Castle in Klaus on the Pyhrnbahn as an international Christian leisure center. The lock is also used to prepare for confirmation and confirmation ( confirmation and confirmation camps). Bible schools and conferences are also offered by the Torchbearer Movement .
