Evariste Mertens
Evariste François René Mertens (* 1846 in Breda , † 1907 in Zurich ) was a Swiss garden architect of Belgian origin.
Life
Evariste Mertens was born in 1846 and came from Belgium. After completing his studies at the Institut horticole in Gent and horticultural practice in England and France , he came to Switzerland at the age of 24 , where he and his fellow student Arnold Neher founded a horticultural company in Schaffhausen in 1870 .
With the son of Leopold Karl Theodor Fröbel , the horticultural architect Otto Karl Fröbel , he played a key role in the execution of the Zurich quay. In 1889 he founded his own horticultural company in Zurich, which was later continued by his sons, the brothers Walter and Oskar Mertens . In addition to public facilities, Mertens also designed numerous private gardens. He found his final resting place in the Enzenbühl cemetery in Zurich .
