action

Liz Chambers broke down on a country road and heads for the next village. The local workshop owner promises a remedy, but not immediately. In the diner next door, she meets the reporter Sarah Austin. She stays in Hope to research the village history. There are ghostly stories about the village. Sarah persuades Liz to drive her to the farm of the ominous priest Hathaway, who murdered the sinners of the village in a bestial way to deter. You can still visit the vacant farmhouse, then Sarah is overwhelmed by a scarecrow and Liz, who had briefly stepped out, only finds her badly beaten to a cross on the adjacent corn field.

In a panic, she runs back to the village to notify the sheriff. On the way there, she too is attacked several times by a scarecrow. Sheriff O'Connor tries to call for reinforcements, but cannot establish a radio link to the nearest town. Then he goes to the Hathaway Farm to see if everything is going well. Liz stays in the police station and is now on her own again. The gruesome straw figure clad in rags is already sneaking around the house. With a pump gun from the sheriff's gun cabinet, she shoots off the arm of her pursuer and then looks for protection in the nearby rectory. The pastor calms her down, but then Liz discovers a crucified corpse in the church too. The people of Hope are also gathered here to enlighten Liz. Hathaway's immortal soul is looking for a new body to slip into. In visions he foresaw Liz's arrival. She should or will give birth to the child in whose shape Hathaway wants to continue to live. With strong resistance, Liz is captured by the villagers and taken to Hathaway's country house, where the act of procreation is to be carried out. She escapes through the window into the corn field and slips into an underground hiding place where she wants to hold out until darkness falls. Surprisingly, she meets a scared 9-year-old girl here. Her parents were murdered in front of her eyes, the little girl reports with tears. After waiting for a while, Liz makes her way to the next town, promising the girl (Sabrina) to come back of course. She reaches Liberty without being discovered, but she cannot expect help here either, because the men at the police station are dead.

Sheriff O'Connor suddenly appears out of the blue. Liz feels relieved, because O'Connor is the only newcomer in the village, so is not one of Hathaway's followers. Since she can trust him, she gets into the car with him. When she briefly suggests on the drive that she is no longer a virgin, the features of the law enforcement officer change. Angrily, he fervently quotes a verse from the Bible, which makes it clear that Hathaway's soul has taken possession of him. He overpowers the young woman and brings her back to Hathaway's farm. Since Liz is no longer a virgin, she is considered depraved and is about to be crucified in the corn field, like every sinner in the village. Hathaway continues to look for a body for his impending rebirth. O'Connor's body isn't good enough for him. Hathaway only temporarily slipped into the sheriff's body, whom he had crucified hours earlier. Decay will soon set in .

Sabrina hears the conversation between the adults preparing Liz's crucifixion near the pit and realizes that Liz is in great danger. She quietly climbs out of the hole in the ground, runs to Hathaway's house and sets it on fire. Hathaway's disciples are now distracted as they want to save the house on fire. Liz just barely escapes her crucifixion. Only O'Connor has to fight back, she stabs him in a duel with a pitchfork. Then she takes Sabrina in her arms and walks with her into the sunrise. Hathaway's soul follows the two. One more time, Hathaway's soul slips into the body of a dead man. In the shape of Sabrina's father, who is also crucified in the field, Hathaway tries to lure the child to him, then a flock of crows rushes at him. The birds - Liz thinks they are the souls of the cursed - kill him with beak blows.

useful information

  • The budget for the film is estimated at $ 1.5 million.
  • The film is classified as a B movie.
  • Hathaway's religious verses actually come from the Bible (Chapter: The Way of Fornication). The German synchronization text, however, is not the same as the Lutheran translation.

criticism

"This film distinguishes this film from other low-budget horror films of its kind [...] because of its committed leading actress, the skillful build-up of tension and a winding story, which in halftime 2 gains a little distance from the formula. Not even the moderate CGI effects can tarnish the positive overall impression. "

- Kino.de

“[T] he script is not quite stable. Perhaps [this] is because David Benullo's second direction was also written by him. [...] The possible lack of distance between the director and the script can be a potential source of error. "
