Eviota sigillata is a very small marine fish from the goby family(Gobiidae). It occurs in the coral reefs of the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Seychelles to the Northeast Australian Great Barrier Reef , Micronesia , the southern Japanese Ogasawara Islands and Tonga .

features

Eviota sigillata reaches a body length of 1.1 to 2 centimeters, has a moderately elongated body with a rounded head profile. The dorsal fin is supported by 7 hard and 8 to 10 soft rays. The anal fin has one hard and 7 to 8 soft rays. From occurring in the same area storthynx Eviota different Eviota sigillata by the missing spot behind the eye; from Eviota zebrina , which has a dark point on the center of the caudal stalk, through a dark point each on the upper and lower part of the caudal stalk.

Way of life

Eviota sigillata lives at depths of 4 to 21 meters above sandy soils and in sheltered reefs in lagoons and has the shortest lifespan that has been recorded in a vertebrate before the twelve-week-old turquoise prachtgrundkarpfling ( Nothobranchius furzeri ) . The average maximum age is only 59 days. The animals spend their first three weeks of life as fish larvae pelagic in the open ocean, then settle in reefs with a length of one to two centimeters and become sexually mature within two weeks. A maximum of 3½ weeks of life then remain for reproduction. The eggs are guarded by the couple until the fish larvae hatch. The lifespan of Eviota sigillata was determined by examining the otoliths ("ear stones") of the animals, which form an onion skin structure with day rings as they grow.
