Ewa Rzetelska-Feleszko

Ewa Rzetelska-Feleszko (born May 14, 1932 in Warsaw ; † February 22, 2009 ibid) was a Polish linguist , dialectologist and onomatologist . Her research focused on the toponyms of the West Slavic languages , especially Polish and the other Lechic languages , including Polabic . In addition, she dealt with German namesake on Polish territory.

Career

After completing her studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1955, Rzetelska-Feleszko spent almost her entire academic life at the Institute for Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw , where her academic teacher Zdzisław Stieber supported her way into research and her for work on the language atlas of Kashubian and neighboring dialects (Polish: Atlas językowy Kaszubszczyzny i dialektów sąsiednich ) and thus won for research into the languages ​​and dialects of Western Pomerania. Already her dissertation on the earliest sound developments in the Slavic dialects of the Koszalin Voivodeship (Polish: Dawne słowiańskie dialekty województwa koszalińskiego. During martial law in the People's Republic of Poland, Rzetelska-Feleszko was exposed to political repression because she was a leader in the Solidarność trade union movement . Her post-doctoral thesis on toponyms on - ica (Polish: Rozwój i zmiany topononimicznego formantu -ica na obszarze zachodniosłowiańskim ) could only appear in abridged form in 1978 and obtaining the professorship was delayed until 1988. After Poland gained independence, she managed to renew her academic contacts and to bring together scientists from numerous Slavic countries and Germany for a large encyclopedia of Slavic onomastics, which was finally published in two volumes in 2002–2003. In further work Rzetelska-Feleszko dealt with the river and place names in Pomerania and in the areas of Koszalin and Szczecin. In addition to studies on Polish, she also submitted studies on Sorbian, Kashubian, Pomoran, Polish and Ukrainian. In the context of onomastics, she worked on theoretical, structural and cultural issues as well as the situation of linguistic and ethnic minorities. She was always the driving force in dedicated work groups. The scientific oeuvre of Rzetelska-Feleszko comprises a total of over 340 positions. A bibliography of her writings up to 1997 can be found in the anthology Onomastyka i Dialektologia .

Also the German place names in Poland, which started in two waves with the peasant colonization in the 13th – 15th centuries. The research interests of Rzetelska-Feleszko were part of the research interests of Rzetelska-Feleszko. In a study from 1993, she found that German place names are very rare in what is now central and eastern Poland, that they make up around two to eight percent of all place names in the north and west of the country, which are continuously inhabited by Polish people, and that in the parts of the country that became Polish territory after 1945 had a share of between 20/30 and 50 percent.

Functions and memberships

Rzetelska-Feleszko held numerous management positions. From 1990 to 1996 she was director of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. From 1993 she headed the Slavic Language Commission of Department I of the Warsaw Scientific Society (Polish: Towarszystwo Naukowe Warszawy ) and from 1995 she was Secretary General of this society. As an expert, she worked among other things in the commission for the definition of place names and physiographic objects (Polish: Komisja Ustalania Nazw Miejscowych i Obiektów Fizjograficznych - KUNMiOF ). Rzetelska-Feleszko was also a member of national and international scientific societies, u. a. in the International Committee (Council) of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) and the International Society for Dialectology and Geolinguistic.

Honors

Rzetelska-Feleszko received honorary membership and medal of the Warsaw Scientific Society in 2007; In 2008 she was awarded the honorary diploma of Division I Social Sciences of this society. In 1997 she was honored with a commemorative publication on onomastics and dialectology.

Private

Rzetelska-Feleszko was married to the Slavist and Balkanist Kazimierz Feleszko for the second time . Her bones rest in the family grave in Grabowo in the municipality of Mrągowo (Warmia i Mazury Voivodeship).
