Ewald Standop (born January 6, 1921 in Dorfwelver ; † May 31, 2018 in Würzburg ) was a German English scholar , linguist and literary scholar ( medieval studies ).

Life

He passed the state examination in 1949 in the subjects of English, German and French in Münster . There he was with English Studies literary work on TS Eliot's cultural criticism to Dr. phil. PhD at Herrmann Heuer and was a research assistant in Münster. In 1955 he completed his habilitation with a mediavistic, linguistic thesis on the syntax and semantics of the modal auxiliary verbs in Old English: 'magan, motan, scutan, willan' . He then taught as a private lecturer in Münster and Freiburg.

In 1957 he was appointed associate professor for English philology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1960 he followed the call to the University of Cologne . After interim calls to Kiel, Bonn, Gießen and Munich, he was full professor of English linguistics at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg from 1973 . 1967–1975 Standop was a reviewer for the German Research Foundation, 1974–1975 chairman of the Bavarian Study Reform Commission. Even after his retirement in 1989, Standop researched, taught and published well into old age.

His main research interests were phonetics and phonology, lexicography and the language of Shakespeare.

Ewald Standop was a Protestant, married since 1949 and has three children.
