Exarchos ( Greek Έξαρχος ) is a place in central Greece . It is located near the larger town of Atalandi in the municipality of Lokri and is best known for its archaeological sites. Most of the residents are farmers and live from growing grain and cotton .

geography

Exarchos has belonged to the Atalanti community since 1997, and after the Kallikratis reform in 2010, the new Lokri community was formed, into which the old community was merged. The village is located on a plateau about 285 meters above sea level between the mountains Chlomo (1079 m) in the north, Kastro (431 m) in the west, Makryorhachi (507 m) in the south and Misovouno (512 m) in the east. Partridges , hares , woodcock and wood pigeons are hunted in the mountains and migratory birds , quail , ducks , lovebirds and song thrushes are hunted in the lowlands .

Churches

There are nine churches and chapels at Exarchos. In the center there is the church of St. George, to the north that of St. John and that of Panagia on the central square, as well as chapels for the Holy Virgin, for Metamorfosi Sotiros, for the Archangels, for St. George and for St. Athanasios. The monastery church of St. Nicholas outside of the village with frescoes from the 12th century is particularly worth seeing. It is a small cross- domed church with a high dome. Every year on May 10, the village festival in honor of St. Nicholas takes place in Exarchos.

Archaeological sites

The excavation site of Abai is located about 2.5 kilometers west of the village on Mount Kastro . Remains of a late Helladic settlement have been found at Smixi about 4 kilometers west, on the southwestern edge of the Kastro mountain, and the Hyampolis settlement about 3.5 kilometers west on the Assos River (today: Bogdanorema) .
