Exorcist was an American black and thrash metal band from New York City that was formed in 1985 and split again shortly afterwards.

history

Very little is known about the genesis of the band. The group released their only album Nightmare Theater on Cobra Records in 1986 and disappeared again shortly thereafter. Only later did it become known that the names of singer Damian Rath, guitarist Marc Dorian, bassist Jamie Locke and drummer Geoff Fontaine were just pseudonyms and that they were the band members of Virgin Steele (David Defeis, Edward Pursino, Joe O'Reilly and Joey Ayvazian ) hid. The band emerged from a legal battle over the naming rights of Virgin Steele after Jack Starr left the band in 1983. After Starr lost the lawsuit and the Virgin Steele project could continue, the Exorcist project was abandoned.

style

The band played a mixture of black and thrash metal, and can be compared to bands like Venom , as well as early Slayer , Metallica and Exciter . The albums Kill 'Em All by Metallica and Show No Mercy by Slayer are explicitly mentioned . Metal-District.de describes the album as “one of the first real Black Metal records” and claims that Venom was “the only thing that could be called Black Metal back then (well, Slayer was also known as Black Metal describes ....) “, although around 1985 this term was also used for other bands such as Running Wild , Bathory , Mercyful Fate , Slayer, Vulcain or Death Mantas and Nasty Savage .
