Extra Life was an American folk rock and RIO band that was founded in Brooklyn in 2006 as a solo project by guitarist and singer Charlie Looker . On April 10, 2012 her third and final studio album "Dream Seeds" was released.

history

Charlie Looker, who had previously worked with other mostly experimental bands such as Zs and Dirty Projectors , left these groups in 2006 to start his solo project Extra Life. With a first EP he went on tour around New York City . Two years later, he began recruiting additional members for Extra Life; the debut album Secular Works released in May 2008, Extra Life already recorded as a quartet. On the second album Made Flesh , which was recorded as a quintet, apart from Charlie Looker, only bassist Anthony Gedrich was left of the regular cast; However, drummer Ian Antonio was still involved in the recordings as a guest percussionist.

On November 13, 2012, Extra Life announced their termination. The last concert they played on January 19, 2013 in Brooklyn .

Style and reception

The band names the no-wave band Swans , the folk-rock band Steeleye Span and the jazz musician John Coltrane as influences . Musically, it is often assigned to folk rock and avant-garde music, with Charlie Looker's singing influenced by Renaissance music being particularly emphasized. The studio albums are usually just as well received as the live shows; Jared W. Dillon writes about "Made Flesh" on Sputnikmusic.com:

'Made Flesh' has put Extra Life into the stratosphere of other highbrow avant-garde rock groups such as Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids. All unequal in their uniqueness and constantly pushing the lines of what genre and popular music is.

“Made Flesh has put Extra Life into the stratosphere of other highly intellectual avant-garde rock bands such as Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids . All of these are unequal in their uniqueness and are constantly pushing the boundaries of what genre and pop music are. "
