Exultavit cor nostrum (Urban IV.)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Exultavit cor nostrum is an apostolic letter in the form of a papal bull and was written by Pope Urban IV in 1263. This was the first contact with the leader of the Mongolian dynasty of the Ilkhan .

There are different reviews of this letter. It is likely that the letter was in response to communications from the papal envoy . As a counterweight to the Mamluks and the Turks in Anatolia , Hülegü pursued an alliance policy with Byzantium and sought contact with the Christian states of Western Europe and the Vatican . According to this, Hülegü is said to have declared his intention to marry a Byzantine princess in addition to his other wives . Urban IV saw this as a rapprochement with the West and welcomed this step in this bull, he interpreted this development as a strengthening against the Golden Horde .
