The connection across the Gambia is between Janjanbureh on the river island Janjanbureh Island in the Central River Region and Lamin Koto on the northern bank of the Gambia, in the Sami district . Janjanbureh (former name: Georgetown ) is the capital of the island and the administrative seat of the region. The ferry covers a distance of 300 meters on the river.
At Lamin Koto, the traffic route creates a connection to North Bank Road , an important trunk road in Gambia. The road to the west via Farafenni to Barra is in a good, developed, paved condition. North Bank Road is not developed to the east.
To the south, the ferry connection connects via Janjanbureh to Sankulay Kunda and from there to the South Bank Road , another important highway in Gambia. At Sankulay Kunda, on the southern side of the island, there was another ferry connection until mid-2010, but this was then replaced by the Sankulay Kunda Bridge .
The operation
The ferry service has been maintained by the Gambia Ports Authority since 2001 , previously by the Gambia Public Transport Corporation (GPTC).
- Janjanburay ferry
The ferry Janjanburay , a variant of Janjanbureh, is currently the only ferry that operates this connection. It can accommodate three to four vehicles.
