The F-Secure Corporation is a Finnish company for information security .

Companies

The company was founded in 1988 by Petri Allas and Risto Siilasmaa. Today's CEO is Samu Konttinen. Until the year 2000, only the products were called F-Secure, the company itself operated as Data Fellows Corporation . F-Secure has been listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange (HEX) since 1999 ( WKN 928744). The company has offices in over 60 countries and research facilities in Finland and Malaysia . In 2018, F-Secure generated sales of 190.7 million euros. At the end of 2018, the company had over 1,600 employees.

There are several different naming options for the F from F-Secure:

  • All employees at F-Secure / Data Fellows are [F] ellows, i.e. partners, companions.
  • [F] riðrik Skúlason had written a command line-based antivirus program that later became the antivirus software F-Prot (this software already had the F-Secure logo, which is valid today)

Products

F-Secure pioneered the use of multiple virus scanning engines in one product. Various scan engines can be used simultaneously to monitor the data, which significantly increases the detection rate of malware . Originally, the F-Secure products used the F-PROT scan engines from the Icelandic manufacturer Frisk Software and AVP from the Russian provider Kaspersky Lab . In the current F-Secure solutions, in addition to the virus scan engine from Avira (internally referred to as Capricorn), search algorithms developed by F-Secure are used. These in-house developments of F-Secure engines are called: Gemini, DeepGuard and Hydra.

Another area in which the Finnish company pioneered was the detection and removal of kernel rootkits from the Windows operating system. The technology was first presented in 2006 at CeBIT in Hanover under the name BlackLight. To do this, the tool searches for processes, folders or files that are hidden from the user and displays them with additional information - for example with the CD copy protection that hit the headlines in November 2005, which Sony partially used in the USA. This used rootkit technology to camouflage itself from PC owners.

F-Secure's focus is on virus protection and intrusion prevention - although before 2004 the company made a name for itself primarily with products for SSH encryption and has received awards from the Finnish government for this. However, this business area was transferred to the American software manufacturer WRQ Inc. in order to concentrate more on the core products. The current product portfolio includes solutions to protect PCs, servers and mobile devices against viruses , worms and Trojans , spam and phishing protection as well as software and appliances to protect e-mail and Internet gateways. The company F-Secure is known for reacting very quickly to the discovery of new viruses and for providing updates and removal tools. The F-Secure company also provides a free online virus scan, free PC HealthCheck and a bootable rescue CD download on its website . The target group are home users as well as companies as well as Internet service providers and mobile phone providers.

In June 2015, F-Secure expanded into the enterprise market with the acquisition of nSense, a Danish company specializing in security consulting and vulnerability analysis. In February 2017, the cybersecurity services sector was further expanded with the acquisition of the Italian company Inverse Path. The company was privately owned and has experience in the aerospace, automotive and control engineering sectors .

In June 2018, the British security company MWR InfoSecurity was taken over.
