The company was founded in 1853 as a delicatessen and wine wholesaler by August F. W. Borchardt at Französische Strasse 47 and 48. The current building at number 47 was not rebuilt until 1895.

Thanks to his diligence and business acumen, Borchardt quickly became successful in Berlin and in the German Empire as well as abroad. Borchardt also ran a mail order kitchen, which was something unusual at the time. Customers not only included the upper class, but also the nobility and the Prussian court. In the Wilhelmine era, Borchardt was finally appointed purveyor to the court . Successors to August F. W. Borchardt were Hanns and Fritz Borchardt. At the turn of the century they were appointed purveyors to the imperial court . After Hanns Borchardt left the company, Fritz became the sole owner.

Because of linearization in the era of National Socialism came home Kempinski , the former Haus Vaterland on Potsdamer Platz , on 1 December 1941 as a branch in the possession of the family Borchardt. It was named F. W. Borchardt . All the larger buildings around Potsdamer Platz fell victim to the bombs and fighting at the end of the Second World War . The main building on Französische Strasse was hardly damaged. However, the restaurant was closed until 1948. On November 16, 1948, two independent restaurants opened in Berlin (here guests could sometimes eat at high prices without handing over groceries ), including the former Borchardt . When the HO was formed in 1949 , the Borchardt became their property. It was named Lukullus and gradually specialized as a fish restaurant. It later served initially as a youth dance hall and in the 1980s as a restaurant for construction workers from the companies commissioned to build Friedrichstrasse. 1990 came the end of the restaurant with the political change . The building was re-privatized, renovated and reopened on March 5, 1992 under its traditional name borchardt by Roland Mary , who is still in office today .

At the Französische Strasse location, prominent personalities, federal ministries and the Federal President's Office , embassies and DAX companies are among Borchardt's customers.

Today, the Borchardt restaurant is also successful in the catering sector.

The poem New Year's Eve with the cannibals by Joachim Ringelnatz names the Borchardt kitchen, Berlin , as a comparison .

Headquarters

The building of FW Borchardt at Französische Straße 47 was built by Carl Gause in 1899–1900 as an extension of a neighboring house that is no longer preserved today. The building extends over five floors including the attic. The representative facade made of red sandstone shows neo-renaissance and neo-baroque influences . Two street entrances, four rows of windows and the elongated balcony on three strong double consoles on the second floor dominate the building. The company's monogram is attached to the balcony in cast iron above the entrances . At the top are the lettering F. W. Borchardt and the year of foundation in Roman numerals MDCCCLIII (1853). The building is a historical monument.
