The FFH area Rantzau Valley is a state for the system of protected areas Natura 2000 selected and the 2004 European Union Notified FFH area in Steinburg , Schleswig-Holstein .

scope

The area includes the Rantzau from the Hohenlockstedter district of Ridders (i.e. without its source flow) to its confluence with the Stör and the Lübschen Bach from its source in the Lübschen woods (Itzehoer Stadtforst) to the confluence with the Schlotfelder Graben ( Stormsteichbach ) and the Schlotfelder Dig from there to its confluence with the Rantzau. In addition to the waters, their bank areas and valley areas also belong to the protected area. The total area of the protected area is about 215 ha (2.15 km²). It lies in the areas of the communities Hohenlockstedt, Schlotfeld , Itzehoe , Winseldorf and Kollmoor .

Flora and fauna (fauna and flora)

In the protected waters, in addition to the brown trout, the river lamprey , the river lamprey and the sea lamprey can be found, as well as the mayfly and river cap snail .

In the stretches of water with a higher flow velocity, there are water stars , berries and shield water crowfoot; in the sections with lower flow velocity (from Winseldorf) the yellow pond rose .

Swamp blood-eye , swamp violet , fever clover and hedgehog sedge can be found on the remaining swamp forest and bog areas in the valley area ; the chess flower on the meadows of the Störtal .

Protection goal

After the Rantzau was expanded in the 1960s (straightened and provided with riverbeds ), natural habitats were only preserved in a few tributaries. Brown trout and brown lamprey populations remained but isolated from each other.

From the year 2000, the Rantzau's water system was renatured in several steps and the water was made passable again, in particular by replacing bottom falls with bottom gliding. As a result, river lamprey and sea lamprey spawn again in the Rantzaus system.

The aim of the protection is to maintain a diverse river system with structures typical of floodplains, in particular as a spawning area and growing area for lampreys.
